The one good thing is that sometimes you'll get in and gadget rape him afterwards, but seriously the fact that you can't negate the clouds is really bad for Tager as with his poor mobility it will be really hard to escape those :/

This is a Tager mirror of me and Coopa this past Saturday. Mike Z already gave us some advice but I figured I'd post this here to see if anyone else had any critiques. Be as brutal and blunt as you like. I am a big boy so I can take a little criticism. I'm the green Tager and Coopa is the black Tager.

Mike Z already gave these basic tips:

- 360A (or B!) on Tager should be followed by 2B xx AC, etc. There's zero reason to do anything else.
- Throw combo of choice is not throw xx BSledge, etc anymore unless you want corner (in which case BSledge, 5C->2D). Throw xx AC, elbow, 5B->4D is B&B now.
- CH Hammer should be followed with 5C->6A->2C xx AC, etc.
- Fatal Counter combos should be second nature by now. :^(

Any other feedback is much appreciated.

I second everything Mike Z says with regards to Tager mirrors. 360A > 2B > Collider (You can do B-Gadget afterwards, but I hate doing Gadget against Tager Edit: personally, I go for 2D), and more Fatal Counter combos (you could have done Maho's corner FC combo twice).

Against the Lambda, I'm not sure why you're doing 5C > 6A > Collider after a CH Sledge on the ground >.>.

Also, you don't need to do Collider > 6C > Collider in the corner since it'll send Lambda out of the corner. Personally I'd go for 6c > j.2C, and then you can do whatever (e.g. Sledge A, 2A, Collider reset; delayed Sledge A (will whiff), 720; meaty 2B; etc.) Edit: She was magnetized too, so if you really needed a double collider combo, you could have done a Collider whiff combo which should do more damage. Edit2: Actually, wait, WTF, you had 100% meter at that point, you should have done 6C xx MTW + Terra Break to end the round.

Edit: More Tager mirror things
- You really don't need to super jump against Tager, you'll just get 2C'd (Though you were doing most of the 2C-ing I guess). Even if you barrier block a 2C after a super jump, they can Collider you after you block it since you're still in the air and your hitbox is so big
- If you need to jump, honestly, a normal jump is just fine. Normal jump j.B > j.C > j.B is a good piece of Tager specific offense.

I personally opt for a "turtle-esque" approach towards this matchup, reason being that Tager is so darn slow it's easy to punish his attempts at getting as you proved by repeatedly landing 2C FCs. IB and Backdash into 360/720 are both pretty easy to land on Tagers trying jump, just need to watch the spacing.

Both players played really sloppily here. Dropped combos, poor teching, random spark volts and whatnot. As a Tager player, you should know better than anyone else not to mash tech. Brush up on those combos and try playing less frantically.

That's my 2 cents.

Note: after a FC 2C, you can do j.2C, 2b, 2c xx collider in place of 5c xx collider in some of the combos in the vid.

Also, yea, both Coopa and Orion were just overly aggressive (almost no blocking lol). 7 straight minutes of spacing and cautious poking action! :lol::lol: I distinctly remember going through a super jump happy rushdown oriented phase in Tager mirrors back in the day, but yeah, it really doesn't work. I will tag 100% of jumps with 2C without question in this match up; as anyone who plays me knows, I have an itchy 2C trigger finger.

First, I am learning the FC combos now as I'm starting to get an itchy 2C finger too...Me and Coopa actually played again today and we we played far less aggressively then in the video.

As for the Lambda match, I was seriously thrown off by how in my face he was playing. I'm used to playing Goryus who is adamant about keep away against Tager which is how it should be played. I have a bad habit of doing the wrong follow ups due to precedent. That first 5C->6A->AC was an accident since I thought he jumped when I hit him...And I never actually noticed I had full meter when I did the double AC so that was my fault right there.

Now as for the sloppy play and dropping combos, the 2P stick was loose and it was dropping many 3,6, and 9 inputs so anytime I was facing to the right, I kept dropping my AC almost the entire ranbat. You practically had to crush the stick to the right if you wanted the inputs to work right. I know I wasn't the only one who was having input issues either. So equipment problems were a contributing factor to that problem for me.:vbang:

I've never been to AI so I don't have a proper comparison but the sticks at SVGL have always been in good condition when I use them. Any input issues were always my fault for not paying attention to where my hand was going. But I know I was doing the proper motions for AC countless times and it just kept dropping it. It pissed me off a lot...

Can anyone explain the 720 at the end of the match?

I noticed that Tager kept going 4BC->BSledge->5C->ASledge->4D

Wouldn't it have been better to go for Gadget combos against Hakumen? I could understand doing that against someone with good reset options like Ragna, Litchi or another Tager but doing that to Hakumen puts him back at optimal 4C/j.C range so it would put Tager at a disadvantage right??

The large number of wrong combos was annoying me, either not going for the most damage or going for a high damage combo that doesn't work there. Also that was a lot of 5Ds I am surprised he didn't get his ass countered all day.

I took a looksie at tager's CS frame chart and here's the few things i nutted myself on.

5A +2 on block.
5D +2 on block.
4D 0F on block.
2C 11~14F head invul.
360B 6F grab.
atomic colider 7~16F head invul.

However, one thing to note about 2C that helps it is, while it only has head invuln from frame 11, tager is crouching for the move's startup until it hits. While this won't help against deep jumpins or like....haku's j.2c, in general terms it helps it to be a good aa by having him duck under aerials.

Also, you guys are being pretty critical of that tager. Can't we all be supportive? >.>

in case anyone's interested this is a vid of me playing :PFew things:
- If you do a combo where they got knocked down (360/AC/3C in it somewhere) with 5D, remember you can do a Gadget whiff to cut off the 5D and start getting close again faster.
- On Rachel you can do ACx2, 5C->6A xx AC, etc.
- On Rachel you can also do 360B, 6A->2C xx AC for 4500ish, instead of ASledge, Gadget.
- Don't let her get away with all those jump-back cannons when she's magnetized! AC or 5D and bring her to you...it's worth taking the dmg. Or at least ASledge them, you can do more to get in than just BSl or sj.C.
- You're using my color. I've been using it since CT or some shiz. ;^)

could someone explain to me what happened at 4:05?Collider adds velocity to them that stays with them until they land...so you Collider, he techs and comes toward you, then double jumps, then waits and does the wraparound dash, but none of that changes his velocity so after the dash he is still flying towards you.
It's actually really useful, if Ara does a wraparound and is magnetized you can AC during the wraparound and know where he's going to go helplessly flying to.

i would say nice collider reads, but at some points unnecessary sledges but you didn't do it a lot so it's np

the one thing i would def saying you could work on to improve your game is IBing. You barrier a lot which, IMO is useless for tager unless ur in the air because you dont want to push them away, you want to catch openings with 360. By working on IBing, youll be able to stop a lot of air pressure n stuff so it could help

Gotta agree with the Gothik, but more IB's are always desired. That aside I was really impressed man. You made good use of the hit confirms more often than not. Only real tip from me would be to play a little more reactively. You had a few overheads and counters you just stared at for a moment >_< It makes me cry a little to not see the opportunity used, but you made up for it with glorious Tager moments =o Volt charge -> 720 on joemomma = Great Day for Scientists

Thanks for all the tips, I really appreciate all of the input. I never noticed how much I barrier blocked until it was brought up so I'll keep an eye out for that one and try to IB more. I'll definitely admit my hit confirms were off that night, I was so nervous that when I managed to get a hit in sometimes I'd spaz and forget what to do next or mash something random. :vbang:

I could only hope at the next tournament that I'll be a little more relaxed but only time will tell. xP

So this is me at the last NorCal gathering playing against a regular Noel there. He plays very well so I have no real issues losing to him. But I wouldn't mind some advice cause I'm wondering if I really did anything wrong or if I just got outplayed.

Also, I do know doing CH Bsledge>6B>6B>5D>BSledge does not work. I was for Asledge instead of the 2nd Bsledge as I've been using it at a tech trap since I would follow up the Asledge. Most people don't catch that its a normal Sledge trap cause of how random the combo is so I'm milking it while I can :v:

Another thing is, not just you, but all tagers should stop doing 5D, Bsledge. It's so easily punishable by good players. Just doing 5D alone is good enough as you can do many mind games from a raw 5D.

You shouldn't use j2C so much. I mean the ones you used close to ground were fine, but some you used when you were way above the ground, or even far away and didn't even hit him. Using j2C like that will definietely get you punished.

I dont believe I saw any "proper" endings in your combos. I didn't see any gadget fingers or 2Ds or anything that ends in magnetizing the opponent, or even the galileo setup. Try ending your combos with something that will magnetize them because that's your main key to winning.

The noel did know how to fight a tager judging by how he was using 5a a lot to mess you up or using 5D while you pulled him in and being careful not to let himself get 360ed.

Ok Thank you for the critiques. I will now offer my rebuttal as I see fit:

As for 360s, I do use them frequently just not against this noel because he gets out of them like 90% of the time. I am trying to remember to replace standard BC throw with 360s its just something I'm getting used to.

As for the 5D>BSledge thing, lately I've been trying to just end on 4D or 2D for safer endings to pressure. I been trying to only use Sledge as a means to get close in a blockstring and RC it for extra pressure.

j.2C I am in the process of trying to not do so much because I have been getting slaughtered cause of it recently. Its a pain in the ass to get back to the ground for me half the time so I either do j.2C or j.B. Its a work in progress.

As for "proper" endings, I don't do them much cause I'm a much bigger fan of tech traps and use them A LOT. Once the enemy is magnetized and I get them in a tech trap situation, I have tons of them to work with. I have had many insane comebacks due to my vast array of traps that people don't know about. So "proper" endings aren't commonplace for me except for in the beginning just to get them in the situation to start playing mind games. Thats personally a preference on my part.

And yes he has played me a lot so hes gotten a LOT better at fighting Tager. I used to be able to just plow right through him and he had no clue what to do. So I do appreciate your points and note I am not saying you're wrong nor am I mad by any means, those are just my explainations.

I'm less concerned about how you played, and more concerned about how badly that Noel was. Please, teach em how to combo and teach em how to use jumping attacks to punish anything you do. Everytime you jump next to her you should be eating a blockstring or a counterhit combo because you don't want to jump vs Noel's j.A or j.B. Noel's CS combos have potential to be a lot like Litchi's. Sleep inducing. And I didn't see any super long combos like that. So, if they aren't trying for 5k, they aren't trying to win.

As for your combo enders, make sure they have magnetism before you boot them off the ground and what not. No such thing as a full screen tech trap without magnetism.

hmm makes sense i guess....np in what you want to do but might i suggest sometimes its better to mix it up or do a tech trap on the spot which is always unexpected....ie. CH 5D, then collider reset, jD, collider reset, or my personal favourite is just raw 5Ds because u can do so much from that =p

just remember longer combos give u bar which is always a plus and give u damage for you to end it faster with a 720 =p At one point, if you play the same way long enough, ppl will just learn not to tech...for example everyone at Lovegety knows not to tech against me now because of all the tech traps i go for, which is why sometimes i just do the ones i listed because no one sees any actual setup from that so they just tech thinkin their safe xD

also dont be afraid of psychic colliders..its a great way to mindfuck ppl xD. The way i play is, i like to do obvious tick 360/720 setups. If it works the first time...great..and if not, sure i eat a combo or maybe even not but i have enough health to survive. Then i start baiting jumps...like i would do a completely obvious 360/720 setup such as 5a 5b...then just collider rather than actually 720 lol. Or i just simple 5a collider and catch ppl who think they are jumping out of my 360 lol

That combo works without magnetism. Actually that combo works on everyone...the only difference is it only works on tager anywhere on the screen. For everyone else you need to 360 them into the corner for the 2b to reach. The only thing more ridiculous than that is vs rachel, 360B 6a 2c collider lol

aha thanks...i put countless hours into perfecting 720s as it essentially is the table turning move so i train myself to ib off reaction as much as i can now and 720 through many block strings and just do setups. The tager mirror..god i hate it too lol...honestly no matter who you are fighting against, it will always be 50/50 because it essentially is...who ever magnetizes the opponent first will win as you can see in my vid where i 5D'd him like crazy n just sucked him in many times

Smart play all around, showing good oki game (especially in the corner), sneaky 720s, patience (almost never does random sledges or super jumps to get in), and lots of max damage combos. hmm....dont think i really like his play style...although hes really defensive...its to the point where he really wont even try to go in...he ate crossups like mad from dora and with kaqn...i dunno its kaqn lol but i mean at least by going in..u initiate some sort of contact which could allow u to be offensive or go defensive n start ibing...the 720s werent really sneaky to me....it was like hes so defensive that kaqn or dora thought he wasnt gona do anything so they tried to hit him and got 720ed...like he really does nothing in his matches..almost like hes afraid...evident in the matches where when kaqn or dora dont go in..liek 30 seconds pass without any contact. Random sledges are stupid. i mean sledge after 5D and ull just die from anyone n there's no reason to just do a raw sledge, so that's not really a plus. Wasn't really patience...just dora n kaqn getting tired of waiting for him to do something

almost all the damage he took was from 50/50 mixups and tager being a bad character (a -> b getting instant blocked and punished or having no answer to an autoguard) in the dora matchup. saying "he ate crossups all day" is pretty dumb, and that matchup is horrible for all the illustrated reasons. he didnt take any risks to get in because doing so would endanger his lifebar of his own accord, that's not very intelligent play.

Some of that Tager play was just beautiful, some seriously cat-like reactions in there to make some bizzaro combos. He seems to really love doing Gadget finger RC into collider too, Sometimes he does it to combo extend, sometimes he seems to be a psychic collider attempt, or is he just getting the timing wrong?

That only matters for match winning damage, and he was burning 50 heat on non-match winning damage there. IIRC your opponent can't do anything (Including burst) until he's touched the ground after gadget finger, but he's still in a combo state until he does so I fail to see the point.

Interesting to see the vast playstyle differences between Gallieo and MikeZ too. The former seems to use a whole lot less anticipation-moves in his game (missing out on a few good opportunities) yet mikeZ appears to love votilic charge baiting stuff (and getting punished for it/dropping an otherwise good combo). Yet they both seem to enjoy significant success.

MikeZ uses voltic charge a lot more thats for sure, but Galileo is able to block a lot of bursts and punish with 5c 6a collider....pretty much MikeZ takes a bigger risk but has bigger outcome. Galileo seems to be fooling around a bit more, trying to play for lawlz, evident with the gadget RC collider and lots of 5b 2b ahaha...but it's good to see he's still doing well

Right, not being magnetized is the only way they won't budge. You can tell by the little static particle effects around the opponent, and all of Tager's drives will cause varying lengths of magnetism.

Yeah, such things were not possible in CT. Another reason is that you're doing it too late, AC won't pull in someone who is on the floor.

If you're getting the pull in but they keep teching before the 6K, then you're simply not doing it quick enough, you can either practice it, or just get lazy and use 2B instead.

the collider has a big window you can do, normally for us we have a general feel for it, so we don't really base our timing on any visual hints, but for someone new, you can try doing something like, input collider as they bounce, input it after your first collider is finished, stuff like that

A general rule when reading any combo is that you should be perform the final input of any move immediately after the previous attack connects (for moves which cancel) or as soon as the previous move recovers (for links, Which don't cancel). Due to the advance input feature in Blazblue, you can actually be pressing the next input up to five frames before you're actually able to perform that move if you hold the button down.
For example, look at the ...623C (whiff), 6B, 2C, 623C... part of the combo you were trying to do.

the moment you press C for the first collider, Tager begins to raise his hand. At this point you can already be pressing 6 ready to then press B. Once you've pressed B you can be holding 2 before the 6B attack has connected, ready to press C the moment 6B Does hit. Then finally, 623 can be inputted before the 2C lands so you can just tap C at the end and get that part of the combo.

I made this seem so long and complicated, but it's really just the same trick over and over that's existed in fighting games since cancelling was even possible, most of us don't even realise we're doing it. You cannot hope to be any good at this or other games without being able to do this without thinking.

that's Kouji, the only Tager who qualified in SBO last year in BBCT. there are a few other vids of him floating around i believe. there are a lot of good tager players in the kansai area for some reason.

the 2nd tager player i'm not sure though (i believe the red carl player is ran revo though). note that gadget rc trick he did at the end of the first round. if you rc at the right place, the opponent is in an untechable state i think until he lands on the ground, in which case you can reset the combo as soon as he lands. i've been seeing this a lot lately.

stop doing purple !! throws. yes he got hit by them, don't rely on them for damage unless the enemy player is REALLY bad.

after your first throw you do 6c: don't. stick to some sort of gadget finger setup or walk them into a corner. if they roll through you, 360B on reaction, if they roll back, who cares.

after ch b sledge you need to do a combo, even if they're in the air, 5c 6a collider, b sledge gadget works. any time you do a move you need to focus on if it hits or not and translate it into damage.

dont sledge from so far away, the hazama was terrible and didnt bait you out for doing it and did not whiff punish or move himself using his drive to avoid the sledges.

otherwise theres not much to comment on, he got destroyed by !! throws so yeah...

Some criticism would be nice, but just in advance:

I know I dropped a lot of combos/combo opportunities. I'm mostly just focusing on one or two combos right now until I master them, then I'll move on to bigger and better things.
I know I B Sledge waaaaaay too often. I was almost treating it like a forward dash, because I wasn't sure how to get around quickly.
I need to mash less.

Specific thing:

During both Ragna's carnage scissors and the move kind of like it, I think hell's fang, I'm not sure what to do on block. Is it possible to 360 them inbetween the two hits?

You need to learn your combos. Don't bother going online unless you have.

You can hit Ragna out of Carnage Scissors in between the hits. 720 if you have the meter, otherwise, take your pick between a free 2C FC combo or 360B. I say go with the latter until you actually learn the combos. Followup hit of Hell's Fang can be punished with 5D on IB, not sure about normal block. 5C should work though.

Other general advice - go watch match vids. They should give you an idea of how to approach Tager play.

You'd expect good footsies in a Tager vs. Hakumen matchup but apparently not. Both players spent a lot of time walking backwards when they should've been walking forwards. Tager, to get in, and Hakumen, to keep Tager out and to keep him honest. Astaroth wasted a lot of Spark Volts there. Against a patient Hakumen, Tager might have to spend a Spark Volt on block for an oppurtunity to get in. Astaroth just seems like he was foolishly hoping for Hakumen's guard to slip.

B-Sledge and 2D are retarded unsafe against Hakumen and can be countered on reaction for decent damage. Best part of this match would have to be Astaroth's Gadget Flinger mixups. Good stuff.

that haku-men was shit, he wasn't covering the air to make you respect him, he did a easily baited hotaru after gadget, and he didn't know his damage options.
now onto you astaroth, you had haku magnetized and you didn't try to get in, you wasted good mag trying to play footsies at full screen where haku wants you.
you didn't even use colider or 2C when he air dashed to you like a retard.
I am fucking disappointed man.

last note when haku is magnetized 4D will beat 4C if your close enough.

Some notes on my thought process in the video:

@ 0:39 - Forgot about this move. Honestly, this is the one of the first Haku's I had fought. The first week was just Ragna, Jin, and Tager.

@ 0:49 - I just wanted easy magnetism here.

@ 0:51 - Here, I was kind of testing the Haku's skills. I was wanting to know if he would either counter it or IB. Plus, it got me close.

@ 0:56 - I was actually baiting the counter, BUT I BOTCHED A 360 MOTION?!?! Very ugly...

@ 1:01 - Again, testing the waters. He actually did counter it though, so I tried not to do it any more (even though it slipped in there one more time IIRC).

@ 1:04 - Botched collider. C didn't act like it was pressed....

@ 1:12 - Re-magnetizing again.

@ 1:15 - LOLWTF 720.

@ 1:23 - Expected a backwards tech, then bursted because I didn't want to eat a FC combo, but he messed up anyway...

@ 1:45 - Didn't succeed earlier, but figured it would work here.

First, 4D beats 4C? News to me. Need to check out the matchup thread more.

And yeah, I wasn't anti-airing him like I should've. I need to work on getting in against him too. Being poked by a 10-foot pole makes me leery.

4D, 360A (at a distance), and a well spaced pre-emptive j.D or 5C all beat Haku's 4C. Haku's 4C is overrated, it's getting past j.C that's the problem.

Edit: Also IMO, the IADs that Haku did seemed to be spaced in a manner where anti-air 2C might not have worked (but Collider probably would have worked). Also, when Haku has the stars, they'll almost always go for j.2C > Tsubaki to try to catch you blocking low. I saw you IB'd the j.2C and did a 360A, which whiffed through the animation of Tsubaki lol, but you can stuff the Tsubaki on start-up with Tager's 5A actually, and proceed to do CH 5A > 5C > Collider.

you CAN beat 4c but if you are seriously beating it clean consistently with those tools that hakumen sucks ass. 4c beats tager because the options he has to beat it are higher risk than hakumen has to take. thankfully 4c doesnt lead to anything but another 4c on counter hit so its just a hinderance instead of an actual matchup issue.

Not saying 4C isn't a good tool against Tager, but I'm just saying you can't be too predictable with it. All the things that I mentioned to beat 4C basically require you to be psychic, so yes, there's definitely a risk. I'm just saying in comparison to j.C, I can't really stuff j.C if I know it's coming (unless the Haku-Men player really fucks up the spacing).

Edit: Though I guess the "predictable" thing tends to indicate a bad player.

I find 2C works a lot better in that situation. Reaction time isn't as short as it would be with AC and it gives you a fatal counter.
