I can't grab!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

So I'm a fairly new player to fighting games in general. Been watching them for years, I've "played" a lot of them, but I've never actually tried to get good at them until now. I picked Xrd, I picked Ramlethal, I suck, I get my ass kicked, that's a work in progress. Where I'm hitting a huge wall, however, is with grabs. I can't figure them out. I get grabbed left and right, whether it be as I pressure people in a corner, because I mistime an attack on their wake up or countless other reasons. Yet I cannot seem to grab anyone. At all. Ever. Unless it's on accident, in which case it generally just plays against me. It also doesn't help that, as Ram, I'm under the constant pressure of leaving myself wide open if I mess up a grab and summon a sword instead.

Any tips to up my grab game from veterans out there?

If you're still actively dashing and you try to grab, you'll get 6HS instead. You either need to let your dash skid to a halt, and then throw, or flawless defense to brake your dash and then immediately throw.

In addition, players have a little grab immunity after standing up and after coming out of block or hitstun. If you try to grab the opponent in these periods you will fail, but they can grab you. To counter this, don't stand on people waking up, and in pressure you can fake a throw attempt and instead launch a strike from outside their throw range, CH'ing the normal they get instead of a throw.

Also, if you hit P,K, or S at the same time as 6HS when attempting a throw, you'll get 6P, 6K, or cl.S/f.S instead of placing a sword. It's a useful OS.

I understand the inputs, it's more how to actually get them out. Seems that if I'm attacking someone on wake up, they're able to throw me every single time, whereas no matter how hard I try, it's impossible for me to throw them on wake up despite them being point blank on me spamming jabs. Likewise, people often dash in my face and throw me despite me hitting buttons, but no matter how hard I try to do the same, I'll just get jabbed right out of it. So really it's less "How do I grab?" and more "I do I use my grab?"

Close, but not quite. You don't need to stop, nor do you need FD to cancel your dash, you just need to let go of dash and press 6 again. You could be dashing in their face, let go of forward for a frame and press 6HS and you'll get a grab.

If someone's grabbing you on wakeup, you were too close to them. Step away a little bit more next time. If you can't grab them on wakeup, you either mistimed it, or they weren't in fact close enough, or they were using a move that's throw invulnerable. If you're 100% sure they were in grab range, then you just mistimed your grab and ate a hit.

If they grab you while doing pressure and you were pushing buttons, then they did it before whatever you did came out. You could have either jumped or grabbed them. If you try to grab them and they jab you out of it, well, that's pretty much what they should do, so either you were obvious about it, or they just love pushing buttons, so instead of trying to grab, bait that mash.

If you play Ramlethal, then you have a command grab on top of your regular grab, and I think it has more range than your grab. that's always an option to keep in mind.

It does appear that Ram's command grab has the tiniest rage advantage over a standard grab, so that's good to know. Guess I'll just go in matches and do nothing but grabs until I figure that thing out. Let's see if I can catch a train out of Suckville!

How do you guys do an air throw? Every time I read a jump, this is what I do: tap upforward, let the stick return to neutral, press forward+j.K+j.HS and most of the time I just get the kick. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. Do I have to let the stick return to neutral or can I just go up-forward, forward+throw+OS?

You don't have to return to neutral. You have to hit 6 or 4, you can't hit up forwards.

The OS shouldn't mess up your throw attempt unless you're hitting K before HS. Look at your input in training mode.

You also could be out of range of the air throw.
