BBCPEX PS3 Vs PS4 (Graphics)

Recommended Posts

Hi there

So I was really pumped to get to finally get a Blazblue on PS4 but I've heard that, despite the load times being almost non-existent, the game looks significantly worse at 1080p. I hear this can be remedied somewhat by changing your PS4 to output in 720p. What concerns me however is that some people are saying that the game still does not look as good as it does on PS3. Can anyone clarify this issue? Should I buy the PS3 version to get a best looking experience?

I would also like to know if the PS4 version has any other improved performance aspects (like a more consistent frame rate or if it runs smoother in general).

Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

P.S. Does anyone have some comparative screenshots or videos they could share?

Now it's not like I've looked into it or has the equipment and knowledge for it, but the issues probably is the resolution. I would believe that both games uses the same sprites and thus you can see the PS4 versions more clear and thus more ugly.

As why the PS3 looks better, it's probably the scaler in the TV or PS3 that scales up the image and thus looks better then native 1080p since it's not as clear and probably blurrier.

Why doesn't 720p PS4 look as good as PS3?

I would guess is that just because you put the PS4 at 720p doesn't make the game being rendered in 720p, only that it makes the console output a 720 image, in other words it makes the console turn the 1080p into 720p, and later the Tv makes the 720p into 1080p.

As for comparison, these are some Images I've made. However the PS4 is through HDMI and PS3 is through component when captured, and also PS4 is BBCPE and PS3 is BBCP.

As for me, I don't see an issue, this is how it's going to be with 2D games, hence Arc wants to try to go 3D as can been seen with Xrd.

I had both, the ps3 and ps4 versions with the respective consoles at 720p output and they don't look the same, your theory makes a lot of sense. The main problem on ps4 is how the edges of the sprites look.

Just having a look at those screens. Unfortunately its pretty difficult to tell. The backgrounds do look signifigantly better but are the rough sprites really that noticeable? I mean, as somebody who is used to the PS3 version, will it be jarring? This seems like the whole GGXrd PS3 Vs PS4 thing only in reverse.

Since I have the option to get either I would like to choose the best one.

A few other points:

-Is there any difference in framerate? (I know some stages in CP Vanilla could case a few framerate dips)

-What will be the new tournament standard?

Sorry for being so pedantic but I just don't want another Xrd thing where I buy a version (find out its inferior) and then have to double dip. I was hoping the PS4 version would be the obviously better choice but the matter seems a little more complicated.

Thanks for all the help so far and any more opinions on the matter would mean a lot.

Xrd isn't really inferior either as the differences aren't noticeable in the heat of the fight and you have to jump through hoops to play the game online if you're on the ps4. Oh and it's more expensive to actually buy the game and you have to pay for ps+ to fight people online on ps4. Honestly it's not worth getting. Get disgaea 5 and bloodborne for your ps4. Ports of ps3 games aren't better enough on ps4 to become worth getting when you also have a ps3. Hell I was in a tourney for Xrd last weekend and we had MKX running on ps4 side by side with Xrd on ps3 and Xrd blew it out of the water in looks despite being on ps3 lol. In this gen graphics have hit the plateau really hard. This isn't the jump from ps1 to ps2 any more.

This really isn't true, as Xrd looks spectacular on PS4 and extremely muddy on PS3 by comparison. PS3 is full of jaggies and aliasing where PS4 is sharply defined and crisp, along with better rendering of light/shadows. The rendering quality in general is significantly higher and many objects have dynamic light sources that aren't present in PS3. Backgrounds and background objects in PS3 are extremely simplified, almost all of them lack dynamic lighting and some of them are even cardboard cutouts whereas on PS4 they are actually 3D models. All the graphical effects are toned down as well such as hits, blocks, fire, projectiles etc.

The reality is, though, that they did an excellent job at cutting corners on as much non-essential stuff as possible in order to make the characters look as good as they do on PS3. It doesn't quite measure up the PS4 version, but it's totally playable and still looks great. There's not much reason to get the PS4 version if it would incur you additional costs such as needing a new stick or a PS4 entirely.

Perhaps one of the best things about the PS4 version is that the soundtrack is not compressed unlike the YouTube-quality PS3 soundtrack.

As for CPE, it's silly to expect an old sprite-based PS3 game to became significantly better looking on a port to PS4. PS4 CPE basically looks and performs like 360 BlazBlue when it used to be on 360 due to the resolution increase.

I'm not saying ps4 Xrd doesn't look (and mainly sound) better. I'm saying it's not significant enough for it to actually matter when you're in the process of actually playing the game. You barely even notice the backgrounds unless you stop to look at them once in a while which you can do on your computer too and while they indeed are dynamically lit, the actual char models are not and they're the focal point of the beauty of the game and what you spend most of the time looking at.

I guess different strokes for different folks but to me having your enjoyment of a game be diminished because you noticed jaggies or because you just "know" you're playing a slightly (emphasis on slightly) worse version is ridiculous. Maybe I play too many old games in this day and age so I'm still used to games looking like they did 10 years ago in a way that makes them not stand out in a negative way or something, I dunno.

Many of character sprites by now look dated while some still look good. I have the XB1 verison of Extend and the OG version on PS3 and they look the same regardless of the resolution, but at 1080 its more noticeble how the sprites haven't aged well. Tehy really need to update the sprites in the next game.

A common suggestion for CSE on PC was to set it to 720p in the game and use your video card to upscale instead.

I guess the PS4 game engine is the same and is just set to render in 1080p ingame and you can't change that.

I have the feeling the music sounds also different in the PS4 version. The themes and sounds (SE and voices) seems to have more... reverberation or something like it.

It is not a huge difference like in Guilty Gear Xrd, but it is not unnoticeable.

I also found a funny glitch: If you go on the PS4 into sleep mode when you are on the stage "Arena" and relog in, the screens in the backround starts to flimmer. Furthermore, if you record it with the PS4 and watch it, you see that it mainly records the backround-screens, while the "main screen" is black nearly the whole time (exceptions are Distortion Drives and Astral Heats).

Well the game was made for 720p. The main issue is the PS4 not getting the memo and trying to render sprites in 1080p. (And that's before 1080 -> 720 -> 1080 TV conversion shenanigans.

The result probably looks as cringe-worthy as Celica trying to sing Black Onslaught I.

(Or maybe not, but I've yet to see footage of the PS4 version.) And now you're imagining Celica trying to sing BO with her Jap voice.
