[CPEX] Makoto vs Celica

Recommended Posts

After playing about 30 matches online so far, I'm noticing that I'm having a helluva time dealing with Celicas.  Her neutral game seems really nice; her 5B and 6B especially.  I know my skill level isnt crazy high tier or anything, but there have been some strong Celicas and I cannot seem to find a way to out-poke her.  This is certainly also due to lack of match experience in general since she's a new character, but I was curious if any of you other Makoto players have any impressions on this matchup.

Edit: Forgot to mention 6B anti-air haha

Sorry, I'm pretty inexperienced with this matchup as well, but if you're having major troubles with 5B, there's always 214D to stop them from doing it if you can call it out. What other stuff were you having issues with?

Yes Celica does outpoke Makoto on the ground and in the air. You just have to play this matchup like you would play Ragna in neutral. My neutral isn't as solid as I would like it to be, so I can't give any definite tips, but I'll still try to give some advice. (If anyone has better advice please speak up lol. We don't want the one-eyed man to lead the blind.)

Go into training mode with Celica and find out these 2 things:

1.) How far her microdash > 5B reaches.

2.) How far her IAD > j.C/j.B reaches. (Whichever one reaches farther lol)

Once you know the ranges of these two actions you want to position yourself at the edge of their range or just outside of their range. (You want to bait your opponent into doing one of these actions.) Pay attention to your opponent...and once you see your opponent start to dash towards you or jump off of the ground...you should backdash. (You can also do this on pure prediction too). If they dash > 5B'd or IAD'd in, then your backdash should put you outside of their range. If you timed the backdash well then you should recover before your opponent and have a chance to punish with a dash > 5B of your own.

And if they didn't run in or jumped into the air...then your backdash is still safe, and you can keep playing neutral.

This strategy loses if your spacing isn't right (i.e. you are too close to them and your backdash gets caught by one of their moves). It also loses if your opponent predicts your backdash and over-pursues. For example: You see Celica start running and you backdash. However the Celica player knew you were going to do that, so she keeps running to catch up with your backdash THEN 5Bs.

A simple counter to the over-pursuit strategy is to...instead of backdashing when you normally would, do dash > 2B instead. If they tried to over-pursue, then your dash > 2B will catch them while running. If they IAD'd then they will fly over you and you can either try to 5B them or simply jump away.

But this is just one of the many strategies you can use in neutral, so someone else might have something better to use.

===============================

But Celica should be easy to block unless you are going up against a really good person. So the matchup isn't as bad as Ragna or Mu. Once you block the drive overhead (the one where Minerva slams a giant rolling pin down on you) you can retaliate.
