[XX] XX Johnny, could use some help

Recommended Posts

Of all the things I'd like to do in life, a great challenge I've placed upon myself is to master our lord and savior Johnny. Unfortunately, despite my Solid Year (or two, I've forgotten how long it's been) of practice since my brother first brought home our copy of XX (PS2 version) I'm still running into some difficulties. These difficulties, are simple but still quite daunting... I play on pad because I'm too poor to afford a stick btw :( First, the Divine Blade Transport FRC. The timing on this thing seems downright impossible, I've never once gotten it without accidentally triggering the DB itself. One of the problems with this FRC I notice is that Slash is one of the buttons required to use it. No really what the hell is the timing on this thing? Secondly, and this is the part where I could probably get some help, is One hit Ensenga (enkasu) The only reason I haven't been able to practice these yet is because I don't know how the setups work between characters. I think in all my playing I've never actually been able to do it on purpose, but occasionally I randomly get one and lol. If I could get the XX data on these from someone, that'd be real awesome. I guess thirdly I could also mention I can't TK Ensenga or rapid dash, but that's more a problem with my not having a stick. Pads are a bitch sometimes T_T (given my budget, unfortunately I don't see that changing any time soon though) Sooo... anyone else still play XX? If I could get some pointers or a shoutout or... I dunno, something to aid my experience, that'd be real awesome... Mist Finer for life!

Wow, congrats on your decision to pick up (arguably) the manliest character in Guilty Gear! Unfortunately I haven't played my copy of XX since 2003, so I won't be able to help. Johnny has SIGNIFICANTLY changed since that era. What I can tell you is this: The DBT FRC must be done manually, especially on pad. So if you're using the macro that sets P+K+S to a button, then don't use it for this particular FRC. Try it out. The one-hit ensengas (known as enkasus) are one of the most difficult aspects to learn with him, so I suggest you maybe hold off on them until you learn the basics, like Mist Canceling. Try to get your pressure game set, and a good throw game (especially in the corner). But if you still want to practice them, there is a thread that lists all the setups for the cast...but because you're playing XX I can't say whether those lists are applicable to that outdated version. TK ensenga, just practice. Remember that the motion is 412369+HS. Forget about doing his rapid dash on pad. It's next to impossible; that's a stick technique. Sorry dude. So keep practicing, make sure and find human opponents to play, and continue to ask questions when you have them. I'm positive the other (and much more experienced) Johnnys here will be happy to assist you.

There wasn't detailed frame data back then. But the DBT(frc) timing feels the same in AC as it did in XX. Which in AC, the frc is on frames 11, 12, and 13. I've always done the FRC with no delay after inputting 623S. Like it was all one motion: 623S~P+K+HS. You may have to work out your own timing.

Here's the Slash 1-hit list http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3742

Many of them also work in #r, with little or no adjustment to the combo and/or timing. And likewise, a few of them probably came from XX. I don't have my copy of XX anymore, but if I remember correctly a basic one to practice is throw,j.K-S>dj.K-S-D>Ensenga it ought to still work on Dizzy and a few other characters, with a slight variation in timing.

Thank you. Although I'm of the opinion that it isn't arguable at all. Johnny just IS the manliest character in Guilty Gear. By the way... I don't intend to brag, but I'll have you know... I'm not new to Johnny, he was the first character I started with so long ago. I already am pretty freaking good at Mist canceling at least... I have a decent pressure game, but I haven't delved very far into setting up throws. I find that I'm pretty good at getting in there unexpectedly though...

I'm going to talk to my brother about recording some matches through MUGEN so I can show off my skills ;)

That, and I knew about the rapid dash thing already, I added it to my post as a joke. I checked out a video on it a while ago (I forget who uploaded it) and discovered that pretty fast. Unfortunately, last I checked rapid dashing was a pretty much essential element to his "tick throw" setups... but I could be wrong. Am I? >_> <_<

@4r5: thanks for the link, I'll have to check that out...

Upon a few minutes of practice, I've discovered TK Ensenga to be relatively simple. I can't mash rush the motion like I can with certain other moves... For example, I can usually get "What's my name" to come out by mashing 63214 (or 41236) in anticipation (an easy thing to do if you're about to wake up) then pressing 6/4 +HS at the proper moment to complete it. but like most longer motions must be done smoothly.

About the transport. I tried doing it manually, but moving one's thumb from S to a position where it can hit P K and HS all at once so fast is nigh impossible on a pad. So I cheated... sorta. it seems XX for PS2 has a macro option that solves my problem pretty well... I set L1 to P+K, Thus hitting L1 + HS simultaneously is actually possible, and really not very hard at all. Once I figured that out, I managed to get the timing pretty much down pat. Soon enough I'll be comfortable enough with it to work it into combos. I can't wait to spring it on my brother as a surprise the next time we play... :bad:

thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it immensely.

Actually, as far as I'm to understand you can change the button configuration on PS2 to just about anything you want to (tournament-speaking I mean). So good job finding a way to do it that works for you.

I too cannot afford a stick, and I know how annoying a basic controller can be sometimes.
