I have been playing this matchup quite a bit so I figure I'll drop in some stuff I have figured out.

1. You can get phalanx stocks for absolute free in this matchup. The only problem is whenever you go to get a phalanx stock you give mu a lot of time to set up more steins or dash in for a mixup. IMO don't try to growler too much just grab a couple stocks and use them sparingly for the threat. Phalanx is crazy strong against her.

2. Her 5C is the god. It destroys gustaf and any low jumps and beats just about any move you do if she can get it out. It combos into 3k+ off anything other than standing non ch. This is what you will be trying to beat most of the time. Close range 5A/5B wins. If you get a good read you can dump/valiant through it. Airdash j.B beats it as long as you don't do a really low airdash.

3. Her j.C is the other primary move to beat. Fortunately j.B owns this move if you can get above/below her. If she is trying to jump in on you with j.C you can anti air her with 5A/5B/2C depending on spacing. Ch j.C hurts so be patient against this move.

4. Crossing her up is strong since her moves have so much recovery. If you make her whiff 6C/5C/2C you can get a huge punish.

5. Gustaf is actually pretty good against anything that is not 5C. It can tag her out of her jumps coming down or if she happens to try grounded steins/explosion/lasers you can tag her with a CH.

6. You can bait her DP with a spaced 2C pretty easily. If you go for a late crossup on wakeup the DP does hit both sides so you will get hit.

This matchup is a match of patience really. She will keep you at midrange and fish for CHs with 5C/j.C while working down your health with steins. You are going to have to push her to the corner while running the gauntlet. Once you hit her though she crumbles rather quickly.

Why is absorbing out of the question? Or is it like one of things with Tsubaki where we just gotta kind of Yomi it?

Screw that move, her DP pisses me off. The whole fucking match pisses me off.

1. Unless you're absorbing Habaya or reacting to Totsuka, everything else leaves you more than vulnerable due to the variable distance and warming timers, especially if the µ player is worth their salt and interlacing normals+projectiles to shut you down in neutral.

2. 5c is less of a problem for you guys compared to the matchup that is 2b. The god 2b. 5c's massive extended hitbox and susceptibility to sjiad normals make it a not so attractive tool in straight up footsies. IDK what you're supposed to do about the boot of god though. (5k off 5c, not 3.)

3. j.c is indeed super awesome sparkles. Be careful of approaching vertically in either direction though, because j.b is actually super buffed in this game and has a comparable vertical hitbox to jin's j.2c

4. 5c actually recovers super fast, though 2c is indeed shitty in this game.

5+6 I agree with.

Overally this matchup is pretty joke-tier, especially because her defensive options are so good that not having gapless strings into mixup in addition to not being able to safejump or make her block on wakeup... It's just all bad.

To my experience you're better off in the air in this match-up. Standing still will earn you a ton of Steins around you and grounded approach is awkward due to Mu's 5C, 236A etc. I find it's more effective and stressful to Mu players when you keep jumping over them fishing to land crossup j.2Ds, making their Steins net useless plus she doesn't have really great AAs. 6A is faster but not good vertically and 2C can net her a damaging combo but it's slow both in its' startup (14f) and recovery (27f), meaning whiffing one will cost a Burst.

^It's relieving when other than Azrael players come to bash their own character's normals in their respective MU threads :D

If you bait/block her DP, you can punish with a CH 3D, which leads to HUGE damage without a weakpoint. Has to be done quick, probably will not work if you block in the air.

I can't move forward in this match.

Her great normals, her mix-up, her damage, all of that I'm fine with, but I can't move towards when she's just setting up steins in midair.

6C gets hit, Gustaf gets hit, IAD gets hit, Dashing gets hit, walking and jumping get pushed back further than I can move forward whenever I have to block.

I'm seriously unable to just move towards her without getting hit.

(And she's out of Phalanx's reach, I tried that too)

I have the same issue with Kagura, but it's even worse with Azrael.

Most likely were you fighting me

It depends on what kind of Mu you are fighting. Azrael can easily stuff an openly aggresive Mu but he has troubles dealing with a more defensive one that uses her normals (2b,5c,2c on the ground and j.c and j.2c in the air are amazing when spaced properly) and steins to keep Azrael away.

My best bet is that you need to be very patient and hope that the Mu player makes a mistake (like in misspacing normals, failed or unsafe rushdown attempt etc.) to get in. When you get in, then Mu is in serious trouble

You can also try to read some things in the Mu vs Azrael thread to see if you can find something interesting
