[CP] Hakumen VS Azrael: Taking Old Yeller Out Back

Recommended Posts

You can Yukikaze BHS (that punch distortion) for free during the superflash.

Not when you have 2 weakpoints though. For that, you just kishuu under it.

It sounds like you know something about the matchup.

I do, but not enough to list. Feels like at least 5.5-4.5 Hakumen favor though.

OK so Yukikaze works on BHS with 1 weakpoint, but not 2.

But you can astral it, and OD through it as well.

The way it works is it becomes unblockable based on the corresponding weakpoint. So if you have an Upper Weak Point, you can't block it high, and so on and so forth. You can chicken block it with a barrier (not sure if the barrier is necessary) if you have two weaknesses.

Fells like it'd be the only thing that's help getting through his blockstrings other than garden variety poking, which I'm rubbish at btw atleast considering how badly I got blown up for it. That and that he could backdash out of my pressure with relative impunity, unless I tried guessing a gurren, hotaru or enma in there but felt kinda risky.

What do you have to deal with?

All of Azrael's standing overheads.

5D, 6D, and 236D are all overheads. He can play a pretty mean 50/50 game because he can just as soon do 3D in place of his overheads.

My problem with this match up is always trying to upback, his 5A > 5B gatling has an amazing ability to catch you in the air, where a simple TCH combo will carry you to the corner.

I know 6D is negative on block, not certain about his other moves.

He has some really easy/good confirms too. Him hitting you with 2C or 3C in anyway pretty much guarantees him a weakpoint to tack on.

Jabs are your friend. I usually start mashing 2A when he comes in for neutral so I can catch his dash cross ups, and try to space him out the rest of the time. Agito pressure works pretty well since 2C and his 6A don't hit very high.

I really don't think trying to reflexively 2A/5A Azrael as he approaches is a good idea. I often get CH for doing that. I also don't feel that up-backing Azrael is the answer, as you will get caught jumping most of the time. Just learn how his pressure works and IB to punish what you can.

Good Azraels have wet dreams about 2a mashers and up-backers, I'm sure. Every time I've successfully got out of Azrael pressure, it's because I've weathered the storm and blocked everything until I saw an opening to jump out, or I've Yukikaze'd on a read. But mostly I get hit.

What moves should Hakumen use in neutral? Is zoning in the neutral with j.C, 3c, and the like a good thing to do against Azrael? It seems to work reasonably well against my local Azrael and I often win the footsies war which leads to winning matches.

Also in relation to the Kishuu under the Punch super during its super flash: If you're standing at neutral and buffer Kishuu during the super flash, I always get hit. Seems like you need to kishuu before he activates it to truly go under it.

Edit: frame data says its low profile from frame 1 though, so I must be doing something wrong. Either way, Azrael won't throw this out willy-nilly unless he hits you with a poke and cancels into it or you have two weakpoints.

Ugh, this matchup is annoying. Neutral feels even for the most part, the problem comes when he's in your face. Every move he ends with is almost unpunishable unless you IB it, and that's really it.

He can 5B your J.B crossup attempt, because the hitbox is behind him too for some reason.

You can Enma his 5C tho, goes completely under it.

And man, I can't tell you how much this matchup made me miss 1f 6D. All of his Air to Ground attempts could easily be stuffed.

You can also react to Gutsaf with 3C provided you can react fast enough.
