Arakune Critique Thread - Help out fellow Arakunes!

Recommended Posts

I figured the Arakune thread can use this, hope no one minds. Any who post videos of yourself and allow fellow Arakunes to leave constructive criticism to help Arakune players level up their gameplay more.

You're from Queens? Have you been to TSB before? That's the best way for you to get help.

Which game is this thread for? I'm assuming Chronophantasma, but if Extend videos are allowed too, I have an Arakune-using friend that could probably use some advice. I don't play Arakune myself (too hard for me to learn), but I figured someone has to ask at some point.

I think it's the second or third options on the menu tab. Your name goes black when you do it right.

Thx for the matches it helped alot, just need more exp against Tao and work on my confirms and mixups.

I just got this game recently and I am having a really hard time finding people to practice with. I'm not necessarily a beginner to the series, but all my experience with the games have been on the 360 and I'm having a hard time adjusting. I'm trying to find people to practice with online since I know that just relying on training mode won't get me far. All my friends who played with me don't have a PS3 so I can't just room with them, and everybody I've found in rooms are way, WAY beyond my skill level. I guess I just want to know if there's anybody here I could train with? I feel like I have no chance in hell of ever standing a chance if everybody is THIS good right away @_@

Hey,

I'm no pro, but I'd be glad to help you get the basics down and start you off so you can do at least decently since it's takes time to get better. I can even give you things to practice in training mode and what to watch out for in your replays.

However, where are you located? Do you have skype? I got a PS3 just for this game and still have no mic. lol

Hey! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

I'm located in Pennsylvania, so EST for me. Wednesday and Friday nights and Thursdays and Saturdays are best for me as far as being able to play goes. I do have Skype, I can message you my username and PSN.

Here's a few videos from a local tourney I went to recently.  I know there's plenty of flaws in my Arakune, so please give some real criticism.  Don't go easy on me.  >_<

Unfortunately my match against an Azrael player that I lost to was not recorded, which is a bummer because that was one of the replays I wanted to look back on the most.  Either way, here's the videos in chronological order.

Finally got to do some recording at a local. I get that this isn't the most active of character boards, but I figured I would post these to get some advice on my play. All constructive criticism is welcome. I can see by myself that I need to keep grinding out combos and work on my hit confirms. Any other areas I can improve?

I'll do one at a time.

I only seen the first two videos so I will critique from those. I am still learning MUs in this game in depth so my knowledge of them are pretty limited and linear, so bare with me. But here are a few things that I have caught from your Arakune play:

- I suggest you work on your confirms and combo a bit more so you can remain consistent in a real match. You actually dropped a CH 2a > 2c…That’s not good at all. Sure, it may have been tournament nerves and I can totally understand that…but consistency is important. Dropping a combo pre curse is very crucial in BBCP. Setting up drive moves is a hassle than ever if you don’t know how to play neutral well or play an opponent that now how to get around and stuff you. Hence why you should not set cloud up without having a purpose afterwards or knowing where your opponent is going.

- You IAD j.4b way too much and predictably than you should. Please work on your movements and how you’ll descend differently before going for continuous IAD’s. You’re just giving your opponent a hint on how to time their anti air against you. IAD off of jump cancellable normals, IAD on your second jump after cloud, 9>7>IAD jb, etc. Some ideas for you.

- You kept getting stuffed by Litchi every time she gets up….like, every time. This litchi player was not even respecting you at all at that aspect of the match.

- Regarding the match up itself, know what do against Litchi depending on her staff placement from full screen. This is the key to playing the match up, and knowing how to get around the stage and staff when facing her. Stay away from Mid range and just keep the offense when you are up close.

- Your curse game needs work. First off, don’t use up your c and d bugs to lock down an opponent midscreen. You should only use C/D bugs for combos, resets, and corner curse pressure. Just use a and b bugs only and it should do what you want. Buffer them by doing j.6a/b, forward dashing, during 214a, etc. you were just going crazy with the bugs hoping for one out 4 of them to hit but the other bugs would have messed up the d bug confirm anyway. Take it one step at a time. Work on your mid screen confirms after you figure all that out. Here’s one very basic way to confirm into d bug like you want: 5A>5A>a bug>5B>b bug>j6a>dj6a>236c>c/d bugs. Also, about your midscreen combos…you seem like you don’t know what you want to do and just start throwing out air normals. Continue the combo. You’re in full control. Don’t go rushing around if opponent is in curse and be careful with the way you use up your bugs.

- You really need to make the most out of pre curse combos. When you got Litchi in wall splat, you only did 6b>j6d>6d into like no Curse….Here’s an idea:wall splat>5d>236b>6b>j6d>6d>CURSE.

- I see you doing 6c>6c>3c pre curse and even during curse when opponent is still blocking….Why? Please do less, if not very very little of that, especially at close range in the middle of your opponent’s pressure.

- Don’t go for too many purple throws, especially when you can do something off of certain things like f-inverse.You could have easily taken that match against Hakumen if you went for 6b>j6d without having to take the game back to neutral

- Keep Hakumen away, allow him to approach you so you can capitalize on the curse meter and approach him cautiously when on the offensive. Don’t play him close up at all or let him get the offensive on you at all. Just keep away and space at the same time. If you have him cursed, it’s a pretty bad idea to just throw everything out at him so he can counter super your bugs.Hence why you must learn how to approach with bugs. Keep your distance when locking him down. And don’t challenge him in the air. AA him, evade, or just block if he’s too close.

Now don’t get me wrong, you got the right ideas and I did like some of corner combos and the cute little IAD j. 4b > 6c>6c>3c, which I think I’ll try when I feel like being whacky or want to end match with style.…but you must work on being consistent and conservative when playing with Arakune. With Arakune, you using your movement to fake your opponent and confuse them. Work on a solid neutral and you’ll be set along with the other advice I give you.

Thank you very much for the response, JacopeX.  After watching these videos and analyzing my game, I came to a few similar conclusions, but it's incredibly helpful to hear this stuff from someone else.

Hit confirms and combos are definitely something I need work on.  I've spent many hours in practice mode getting combos down, but sometimes in a real match things go haywire.

Getting stuffed when the opponent gets up is one of my fatal flaws as a player.  Characters like Ragna used to always stuff me with wakeup DPs, but I've gotten better at looking for those and punishing them as a player for the most part.  Speaking of which, what's Arakune's general oki plan pre-curse?  Just pretend that part of the game doesn't exist and set up a cloud?  There's a few players who I've noticed always roll towards me, so I've started just hitting them with 2C every time, but I realize that is extremely risky against players who actually mix up their wakeup game.

And my curse game.  Holy shit was it bad at that tournament.  Actually, it's always been bad.  Over the past week I've spent a lot of time in training mode with curse mode on and working on mixup and general hitconfirms and combos.  I never really had control over curse mode, which was really bad because I've gotten decent at getting people cursed, but then couldn't really do much to make any real use of it.  My gameplan for curse mode in this tournament was: MASH 6C.  HOPE IT HITS.

And that unoptimized wall splat was definitely a blunder.  I'm pretty sure I pulled off this combo a bit in other matches: 5d>236b>6b>j6d>6d.  If not, then I'm at least aware of it, but should at least work on incorporating it.  >__>

Aaaaand 6C.  It's basically a crutch for me.  Well, that, purple throws, and random j.214214Ds.  Netplay has conditioned me to excessively use these moves because I'm always rewarded for doing so.  But in real offline matches?  It leads to my death every time...

Once I can get a chance to be by my computer and my PS3, I'll post my current curse combos for critique.

This is my first post, please don't chew me out.

I am not exactly new to Arakune, but I would love to get better at him, and I honestly don't have anyone to practice him with except random online matches (which inevitably leads me to getting my ass kicked without doing anything at all( despite doing all the supplementary reading)), and that rarely ever becomes productive.

I don't exactly have ability to go around to the arcades, but if anyone is willing to spend some time showing newbie how to manage the blob over PSN, that would be largely appreciated.
