[Xrd] King Ky - Critique Thread

Recommended Posts

When blocking against Zato, I tend to FD when he hits me with melee attacks (from Zato himself), then go back to normal blocking when he's out of range and uses Little Eddie instead. Nobiru (Shadow S) is super unsafe on block, so you can punish with 2P/2S depending on distance to kill LE and get him running away. Zato players tend to use that to catch you jumping, but if you just stay put it's an easy punish.

At neutral, I tend to do lots of j.D xx 236H when he's at the other side of the screen. He's usually pressing something to set up Little Eddie, so you can get a bit of damage in and/or kill LE. At closer ranges you just have to make good reads and counter-poke accordingly.

One thing you can do against Zato is after a CSE/DC, walk up and tick throw him with 6S+HS. That way, if you're just out of range, you can keep advantage, and possibly hit LE if he tried to mash something out.

Lastly, you should always be looking to end a combo with Split Ciel, even midscreen. Throw -> Ciel, Stun Dipper -> Ciel, 2D -> Ciel can all be done midscreen. In the corner you have a myriad of ways to land that, so just watch some videos or something to get an idea.

You're doing pretty well overall, just need some better confirms and experience to improve defense.

Thank you, so your main goal is to kill little eddie in this matchup? What are the moves he cannot do without it?

Also, what is CSE/DC?

I've trained some setup to set Split Ciel, but yeah I understand this is a very strong okizeme and I need to place them as often as possible.

This is my first GG game, it's still kinda hard to hit confirm lol

Killing LE helps a lot, both at neutral and on defense. Losing Nobiru is a pretty big deal for him, since his other options for anti-air/hitting you out of jump startup aren't nearly as safe. j.D is probably his second best tool for mid-long range anti-air, though it's easier to avoid when you know you don't have to worry about Nobiru as well.

Without LE he also can't do Mawaru (Shadow K), which is what he's trying to get you to block. No puddle either, so there goes unblockables.

Naturally, once you kill LE, Zato is going to run away for as long as he has to. Thankfully, he's a bit easier to keep track of in the air than he was in AC/+R, since his fly speed is slightly slower and he doesn't have the flight angle he used to either. At further ranges, j.D xx 236H can work to hit a flying Zato, while at mid range you can run -> SJ -> airthrow/j.K. At closer range you may want to reposition yourself or just block as anti-airing him is somewhat difficult, though if you know he's spent his air options your best bets are 2H or VT (j.S will hit you if you attempt to airthrow at that range).

CSE = Charge Stunedge (236H), DC = Durandal Call (when a Stunedge goes through a Split Ciel)

How good of quality do critique videos need to be? I don't have a game capture device but would like some feedback regardless. Is a smart phone video good enough?

This is my first air dasher, so I feel like I'm mashing a lot.

Smart phone quality is fine, just so long as it's clear enough to see what's actually going on. That way we can give a more proper and accurate critique.

Day 2 netplay against a decent Zato.

I have no idea what this character is capable of, nor where I should block or mash.

Try to confirm your sweep>CSE more carefully,  you can lose a lot of positional advantage otherwise.  Also try to stay out of throw range on meaty attempts.

One thing I noticed was you don't IAD much. Every time you jump then air dash forwards, it is extremely easy read and AA you. I noticed that the Zato you were playing against realized that and was trying to AA you every time you jumped because he knew you were going to air dash forwards.

Yeah that's one of my flaw, it's the same on BB lol

Trying to change this.

Just got stomped by a Ramlethal, i'll try to post the video later.

I can't upload matches for critique at will, but I placed top 8 in an online tourney a while ago so the footage is on YouTube. My match starts at 27:36

I think I clearly need to be pushing buttons more when Potemkin is in my face because I kept trying to play it safe and getting bustered

This is me getting flexed on last night at casuals.

2:48:39 and 3:50:00 is where the murder happens.  The only thing I can reliably say for sure is that I missed a lot of followups on big confirms.  Other than that, I have no idea what I'm doing lol.  Open to any and all suggestions.

I try to use j.D > 236HS to zone out Faust instead of just 236HS. They travel across the screen quick and keep him from throwing items too carelessly. If he tries to teleport there's a good chance he'll run right into j.D's hitbox while it's active, I don't know exactly how reliably it works but it seems to work really well for me so I guess try it out.

Also you should link CSE after 2D instead of cancelling 2D into SD.  Also, no more raw 214K, that faust blocked every single one.

Match notes

Round 1-missed stun edge cancel, huge mistake allowed don to escape corner. That was potentially round ending. Ate too many aa after that mistake. Missed my jump d set up in the corner again round ending potential.

Round 2- screwed by stun dipper. Then screwed by stun dipper again. This was huge lost a knockdown oki in the corner with a life lead.that allowed don to escape and i threw a foolish greed server in there. Full tension guage and i didnt do one fb yrc..unacceptable. bad burst bad jump ins to end the round.

Round-3 bad block string in the corner ending with dipper with no meter. When i can the corner i blew my airdash early. That was my only chance to get the round back..blew it.

Round4- didn't capitalize off of start of the round combo. Should have done a cse after vt. Didn't finish the rc combo properly. Terrible dead angle wasted guage

Day 1 no training and just going raw. Ky feels rather comfortable compared to the whole cast I attempted to play in the last two months (off and on). I understand there's much to learn and there's combo videos to browse but at least give me a simple idea where to work at. I want to devote some more time to training and I actually want to enjoy Xrd.

I'd just recommend the old saying of walk before you run. Get your fundamentals straight and the combos will follow more naturally as you learn what makes Ky tick.

One of the big places I think you need to study is just general defense, for instance, you ate his standing kick while in the air several times in a row. When in the air, especially against characters like Faust and Axl, you have to remember that you can't block GROUNDED moves without using faultless defense. No Marvel style air blocking here. Also keep faultless defense in mind when trying to push your opponent away from you.

Next, I'd just focus on learning his normals, which ones are best for what, what chains and links are possible, and which ones are jump cancelable.

After those two big things you get to move on to the fun stuff like learning spacing/how to keep people out, and combos.

Matches from my monthly last weekend, I played hella scarred.

I noticed some really obvious things but if anyone else can add anything i'd really appreciate it.

Didn't see all of the videos but it seems you need to learn the VT loop. Saw you jump cancel 2HS instead of VT in the corner a few times, could've gotten an extra loop into ciel knockdown.

Work on your meaty 6HS timing and wall stick dust combos.

Got the loop down, I did have it for the most part but I dropped it in casuals before for some reason, wanted to play it safer.

Thanks.

I feel like I've leveled up a lot, especially after attending EVO, but there is still miles of room for improvement.  I know a few areas i need to work on, pressure being a big one, but not exactly what I need to be doing instead.

These are both just local matches that I recorded.  I feel a LOT better about how I did against the Ram, but critique is very welcome on either.

Just going off the first Ramlethal match.

- You're very reversal happy

- You're very GS heavy

Greed Severing as a mix-up option is very risky, and although his block percentage is low on it look to 5D for your high-low mix-up in most situations since it's almost not punishable at all.

Pressure-wise, don't be afraid to just end your string at c.S. That thing is only -1 and cranks risc gauge like no other; not only that, but you also have the option to late cancel into 5HS which on CH leads to a lot of damage. 5HS is likewise a very good ender to your string; it's +1 on block so you can sneak in a f.S in most scenarios for a nice CH fish.

Ky is all about making the opponent impatient whether it be through zoning or frame traps, there's a lot I could try and talk about, but maybe later when I get more thoughts together or if I ever watch the entire video.

see, these guys are the guys I play at least twice a week so they know my play inside and out.  If i would've recorded matches of like 2 weeks ago, you'd probably say I 5D too much, as they said "I don't even react to your dust anymore, I just know it's coming", so I was playing with GS as you can do it at different points. (i wish i had my tournament matches from EVO, i feel like those would be the best indicator)

I definitely need to be more conscious of what I'm ending my strings with, I've always just hated ending it without some kind of mix up, but since I am playing Ky, i suppose that it is natural that i don't.

thanks for the little feedback though! I appreciate it!
