On the hunt for a good fightpad (PS3)

Recommended Posts

Basically as the title says I am looking for a new pad to play fighters on, for two reasons.

1.My current peripheral of choice (DualShock3) allegedly causes problems due to wireless ,even when plugged in.

2.I want all the buttons to be on the face.

So I turn to you guys for suggestions on what I should purchase.  I'm kinda picky about what I play on but I'll definitely look into anything you suggest.

What problems are you having? I'm using the same pad while my stick is getting dual modded and I haven't had problems...

Dualshock 3 (and wireless controllers in general) is generally banned from tournaments due to issues with people not correctly desynching them from consoles, thereby screwing up subsequent matches.

Wireless is bad if you're going to tournaments, 'nuff said.

Maybe the Hori Fighting Commander 4 (or something) is a good choice? I ordered one for a friend, and so far I can tell, the pad seems comfortable enough and it features 6 buttons on the front (Saturn style).

Bingo.  Not only this but I'm finding the DS3 bumpers to be overly sensitive, which leads to me accidentally RCing (or god forbid, entering IK mode) on accident often, so I want one with buttons on the face.

This one seems pretty good.  The shape seems a bit awkward though, any other alternatives?

I'd say the GGXrd pad lol, but I think you may have some difficulties trying to find it now. Will test it later (my LE copy arrived today) and let you know how it works.

The absolute best pad I've used for PS3 fighters is the Sega Saturn USB pad. Too bad it doesn't work for PS4 without a Cronus device... I've ordered the Hori Fighting Commander Pro 4 so I hope that'll suffice until some company can replicate a good Saturn pad for PS4...

The GGXrd pad is pretty much a Saturn replica, but as what's been stated already, I hear it's cheap and breaks within hours of play. I would've bought one for sure if it had better reviews.

The Saturn USB pad seems cool but quite different from the Playstation layout.  The Hori FC seems like a happy medium between the two.  I'll probably invest in that, thanks for the help guys.

You should just save your money and get a stick. They are superior to pad in every way. And all sticks feel the same, so if you borrow someone's or have to use another stick, it won't feel much different. If you have to play on another pad it will feel way different (and you will probably play bad), not to mention sticks are way more precise with your inputs. I recommend any Madcatz sticks. The KE and fight stick pro are great.

I have a stick and I do not desire to play on it.  If that was the issue I would not have created this thread to begin with.

I think I might just invest in a PS2->PS3 converter.  The button layout is still iffy, but at least it has triggers instead of bumpers.

You didn't specify any of that. Just trying to throw in my opinion. Good luck then.

I apologize, I probably should have.  I actually started playing fighters on arcade stick and switched to pad because my PS1 stick didn't work on other systems.  It was a long while ago.

Every little bit helps.  Thank you.

EDIT: Well looks like I won't be using a converter, since those don't seem to exist on the market anymore.  Not good ones anyway.  I guess I'll either be getting the Hori Fight Commander 3/4 or just sticking to netplay forever.

If you don't mind shelling some money out (but not as much as you would for a good stick), you can try to hunt down a good USB Neo Geo Controller. I'm receiving mine from a Japanese vendor through Amazon.com for about $100.

Haven't tried it out myself yet, but I've heard good things in general about the Neo Geo pad design overall.

So now you're back to basically the same problem except that all the hardware doesn't even feel the same? Oh well.

That's not even remotely the same problem.  I'm not a huge fan of the DS3, but if I had to I'd swallow my pride and use it anyway.  However nobody likes dealing with the stupidity that is syncing and desyncing wireless controllers, and those bumpers are trash tier.

So I've also considered picking up a converter.  Problem is that http://etokki.com/iNPiN-PS2-to-PS3-Converter the only reputable one I can find is permanently out of stock.  Is there anywhere else I can find these?

Just received the Hori Fighting Commander Pro 4 pad today. Wired connection, and works for both PS3 and PS4. Feels pretty responsive, but I've been using the DS4 for so long I've grown used to it. Now I've gotta train myself on this and wean myself off of the DS4. Massive amount of losses incoming.... fack!

Don't converters actually introduce some delay and/or may mess up the USB ports? I heard the CronusMAX does that lol

It probably depends on the converter.  I've found one that seems like it might be okay but I guess I won't know until it arrives.  Hopefully I can get a refund if it's no good.  After that I'll try the Hori FC4 and if it doesn't suit my needs I'll probably just quit fighters until Sony starts making wired pads again (probably never).
