Differences between regular and EX, Gold/Shadow and SP characters in the Guilty Gear XX series

Recommended Posts

EX characters have modified move sets, some that change the characters on fundamental levels.  Shadow characters have infinite tension.  Gold characters can be thought of as "boss mode" characters.  Faust, for example, has infinite tension and always throws meteors for his item toss.  Sol has permanent Dragon Install, infinite tension, and health regen.  Testament gains the ability to curse with several attacks.  Johnny's dash becomes a full screen teleport and his Mist Finers are pretty much instant kills.

Depends of the character, for example I-No in EX was able to hoverdash as well as to move freely like she does with STBT. Gold characters are like a representation of the true power of the characters, or most of them. For example Sol is supposed to have unlimited tension because of his Fireseal, I-No gains a lot of speed and becomes way more powerful because she's really that type of character story wise, Bridget on the other hand gains more speed thanks to his power of youth but that's about it. Shadow characters always have infinite tension, and depending of the character they are even more good than their Gold versions, while others like Sol again, they already have unlimited tension in Gold.

And SP characters are just a way to have other colors for the characters including Shadow and Gold, some of them are cool.

Is that the only difference with SP characters? Is the color. As in there's no boost in power of moves or anything like that .

Yeah, SP was just the old indicator for alternate colour selection. In AC it's replaced with the Accent Core/EX/Slash/#Reload indicator whenever you hit Respect at character select.

Something I've always been curious about but never bothered to investigate: What about EX Gold characters?  Do they get an entire set of unique properties, or are they just regular Gold characters with EX moves swapped out where applicable?  For example, does EX Gold Order Sol have different properties due to the lack of a charge meter, or...?

I found this website that shows the EX and Gold/Shadow versions of characters (though this is their #Reload incarnation, which means no A.B.A., Order-Sol, Kliff and Justice, and the characters alternate modes might be different from their Accent Core Plus R incarnations).

Yes, EX Gold characters are a further derivation of the EX characters. They're mostly "The EX character with whatever meter adjustments EX had, along with the usual stupid movement speed, damage etc."

EDIT: Here's what it looks like.
