[CS2/CSE] Lambda Critique And Self-Improvement Thread

Recommended Posts

critiquethread.png

This thread is for posting videos of your Lambda play in order to have them critiqued by fellow Lambda players and have them advise you on what you should work on to help you improve and take your game to the next level.

For those who can't upload videos themselves, I can record matches matches that have been saved onto the D-Card on both XBL and PSN. Send me a message on DL or either system if this needs to be done.

Also, please remember that this thread is open to players of all experience levels and to be constructive with your criticisms.

I didn't manage to watch all your matches, but here's what I got:

  • Your combos and execution are fine for the most part, but I noticed you dropped TK Cresent in a lot of places. You may want to practice getting more consistent with the input.
  • You don't use TK Cresent mix-up. I'm guessing that this is because you're not confident with the input judging from the dropped combos involving it but, if you can get used to using it, it's a really useful skill to have.
  • When you get a hit with 5C, try and confirm it into 3C > 236D instead of 6C > 236D. Using 3C gives you better oki that most characters can't escape from and gives you better mix-up potential (IAD > j.B, Cresent Saber cancels, etc.). It's also better for corner combos since 6C has repeat proration.
  • You do some strange confirms at times too. I'm not sure why you do things like this since you seem to know your combos, but just be aware of it so you can figure out how you can fix this.
  • Your zoning isn't too bad, but it could use some work. Make sure you're always aware of the space between you and your opponents and what your best options are (you used 6D twice when your opponent was running towards you for example).

You seem to have a good understanding of the character though, so hopefully you can use this to just polish up your play a bit.

vs. that Ragna:

I saw when you got trapped in the corner, you were quick to try to press buttons or use calamity sword more than usual. You got hit by a random j.214C in the third round because you hit a button for no reason.

You should try more blockstrings when you have someone blocking 236D©, I mostly just saw one low, overhead, or teleport to the other side.

I don't suggest doing 236A in front of your opponent unless you know you're going to end up on the other side. Most players nowadays look for that grab right after it or you might run into someone who predicts that move and punish it severely. Ragna can just DP it or even FC it.

vs. that Arakune:

When you were fighting the Arakune, you should have never been that close to him unless doing a blockstring then you have to quickly get away. That's how you almost lost the first round.

Try to zone hit more with 6D and 2D, and also look for when he does that little switch side back dash in the air, you can punish that immediately with 2D, in some cases you were in perfect position to do so.

Basically when fighting Arakune try your best to keep a sword on him. I saw a lot of running but not much zoning.

vs. those Lambdas:

There were some times where the Lambda whiffed 5C you could have easily punished that with 5D for a big ass combo. That is one of the main things I look for and try to make my opponent do in Lambda mirrors.

You air dashed a lot, if that Lambda realized that he would have punished you every time. You also didn't punish that Lambda's air dashes.

Try to trade her 214D© with a 5D instead of dashing back

vs. that Tager:

Try punishing those sledge hammers, he did them more than usual.

vs. that Rachel:

Again, you gotta punish her little ass air dashing. 6D and 2D are your best friends in this match-up

Try to bait the cat chair and kill her punk ass.

And look for her to jumping to set up lobelias, pumpkins, and George.

I hate Rachel.

vs. that Litchi:

Good shit, keep that bitch away at all times, or at least that is what I try to do.

Mu vs. Tager:

Idk shit about playing with Mu. I just see a lot of Mu players hit 5C one more time...

misc.

You might want to work on confirming you CH 5Ds, I practice this by putting the CH on in training mode sometimes just to get used to reacting to it.

There were some instances where if you did a RC you could have gotten a better combo when you had the heat. Such as the end of the first round of your first match with Lambda you could have RC the crescent to a 5D for a kill. You won the round but still you can never count out a comeback sometimes.

Like HexaNoid said, you weren't really consistent with TK cresent or you just never tried it at all. There were some combos you could have added it just for a little extra damage.

If you get a CH 4B with your back in the corner you can dash under to 5C>BnB corner combo. You got it once or twice and it looked like you didn't know wtf was going on.

Try getting confirming 5DD>236B more, you dropped it a couple of times.

Good shit though, you won every match in the end.

There were sometimes when you didn't go for the kill when you should have. Like around here and here, you could have ended the round with 632146D but you instead gave the opponent a shot at a comeback.

You did 214D too much in blockstrings. Doing it after 3C or 6C is dangerous and it would be better to do 236B or nothing. But he didn't do anything to stop it so I guess it is okay.

j2C is a really easy move to hit confirm off of. You auto-piloted 5C mash after it a lot and shouldn't since there are much better options if the opponent blocks it. Plus 5C only combos after j2C if it was a CH. You're much better off trying to confirm whether or not you j2C is was a CH, normal hit or was blocked. A good example was here where you could have had an easy j2C->2DD->j214D corner combo. I also noticed you do 5C mash after jC as well.

236236D after a j214D combo ender is a bad waste of meter.

Don't know if it was because of netplay but I didn't see you IBing that much. It is particularly useful versus Ragna since his stuff is so easy to IB and it lets you backdash out of his pressure.

I only watched the first 4 matches. I'll try to watch the rest later and see if there is anything else I noticed. Pretty interesting matches though. Do you play that Ragna a lot or were those the first matches against him?

QUESTION: Does anyone have something to record my Lambda from a player match spectator slot just by watching my games, or does it have to be on the D card? Because I don't play ranked but I would love to get a more recent game of my Lambda up so you guys can critique <3

I could do this for you. I might not be available at the same time as you due to timezones, but if you make a spectator slot and let me know when you're ready to be recorded, I'll try my best to get on.

HexaNoid, lime93, toanenadiz, thanks a lot!

I didn't manage to watch all your matches
Oh, I was really interested in matchups against that Ragna and Tager; other players were not difficult for me

Try punishing those sledge hammers
I'm not sure how should I punish them :(

you could have ended the round with 632146D
I still drop calamity ender too often :(

236236D after a j214D combo ender is a bad waste of meter.
I did not completely understand what is it about?

Do you play that Ragna a lot...?
Yes, a lot. And what's the point? Maybe he knows me too good now...

You would do the D-spam air combo into j214D ender. Then you would land and do 236236D and the opponent would just tech and air dash over it and put you into pressure, effectively making you waste 50 heat.

And I only asked if you played often because it looked like you guys knew each other's habits.

Try not to waste meter if you can help it. Counter assault is one of Lambda's few ways to get out of pressure so it is useful in a pinch, there's also DP Calamity, or even a RC, or a Calamity ender. Combos like 2147D > RC > 5DD > 236C, become possible and lead into huge damage. Legacy Edge is great and all, but only as a punish, and seldom a pressuring tool.

Well he did them more than usual, I probably would have stood a little closer to so if he throws it out it will whiff, and I can punish. I try to stay away from Tager, but not completely full screen.

I was thinking the same. I'm still trying to re adjust my play style moving from a pad to a stick as well.

Can someone please watch and give me some tips to help me out with my playstyle?

  • It's been said before, but try not to use 5C as much as you do; using it from full-screen and at the start of a round isn't a very good idea.
  • Try and use neutral techs instead of rolls in the corner since they're a lot more difficult to punish.
  • You don't seem very comfortable with zoning that much. Lambda's close-range game isn't particularly strong, so most of the time you'll want to be trying to keep your opponents at bay with swords instead of charging in head first.
  • Your combos need work. You almost had something here (minus the bluebeat), but went down a sub-optimal path and then didn't finish the combo. Make sure you're confident in your confirms and know what combos you can do and when so you don't end up with wasted opportunities.

Th key things I feel you should be focusing on right now are getting your zoning and combos then. You'll need to work on your fundamentals too (blocking, applying proper pressure, etc.), but you can decide whether you want to focus on that or the other two things first.

Honestly, I don't feel the need to comment on your play all that much. You seem pretty strong fundamentally, you had your combos down and your execution was great to match. Both of you played the match-up well in my opinion and even though you seemed to struggle keeping Yarin out at times, I feel that has more to do with him knowing how to get around certain things (like this, for example) more than you having bad zoning skills.

Other than that, I'd just like to point out that you had plenty of time to 2D Yarin's Swallow Moon here and I'm not sure why you didn't. You passed up on good damage here, but that's a minor match-up related thing anyway.

Oh, and I lol'd at your cheeky throws. :P

Ached... 2D > 6D works yah know. that wrecks Rachel so hard in the mouth you have no idea.

Overall though fairly solid, I just noticed 2 main things that I noticed in the video.

1.) Use more optimal combos. I know its online and they might be tough to do some times but practice them up and learn when you can and can't use them. There were a couple times where I almost jumped out of my seat because I was like "OMG YES 5K COMBO COMING" then you ended it quick and only got 2.5(ish)k.

2.) Don't just throw out d attacks all willy nilly. It almost seems like you don't know all the options that Lambda is capable of in specific situations. Such as what I said earlier of 2D > 6D. There were quite a few times where Luke could have caught you for throwing out a random 5D or 6D but he didn't (I don't know why:psyduck:). A stronger Rachel player would have capitalized on a lot of those little mistakes and to be honest this is an easy to fix problem. Just watch high level matches of Lambda vs Rachel and you'll notice that zoning her is fairly easy. Overall though I think you did a good job zoning her out but its just those little things that can cost you the game, it cost you round 2 :P

Corner oki. Always go for it unless it is a kill combo. There were two times where you took Rachel out of the corner and you could have done pretty much the same damage if you kept her in the corner with oki.

Punish cat chair with 5D, 5C(1) or 6C(1). You don't really want to punish it with 5C mash.

Rachel should never be allowed to summon two things while she in the air. When she was summoning the pumpkin, you should have got into position to D her before George comes out. I'm assuming you didn't do so because you have probably fought Rachel who instantly wind the pumpkin after summoning, right?

Yeah, most times when I play Rachel they use their wind a lot after the pumpkin is up some I'm weary at times. I know I don't normally go for 5k damage combos, mostly because I either don't think of it at the time, or because it's a bad combo start so I just go for the easier combo. Anyways, I never think to use 2D > 6D, good looking out. I've been trying to incorporate it more but I don't play against a lot of Rachels. This video struck me as odd because I did a bunch of sub-par combos and still managed to win. And the crazy thing about that chair, whenever I see it, I just blank out and spam 5C, really need to get out of that habit.

Anyways, how was the mix-up game and things like that, I'm trying to find a middle ground for it. Thanks for the advice guys, I feel my Lambda is getting better every day :D

.....What do I think...?

I think that Rachel outplayed you in game 1. You outplayed that Lambda in game 2. Game 3 was hilarious. SO MUCH DP IN GAME 4!

...But do you want me to actually critique it or is it just a video for the video thread?
