Does anybody know how Noel can deal with Tao's mobility?

All of my attempts to hit her get beat out by her normals and any attempt I make to catch her ends with her flying towards the other side of the screen.

In the last version our 5A/2A/j.A was are best way of dealing with her speed ... poking her out of it constantly can start to lead to mistakes from an unstable opponent.

Don't you dare attempt to fight her in the air though because she clearly outclasses us in that department ... while she is a tricky character she will have to come down to our battlefield sooner or later, if she tries any jump in's 6A should beat it clean but be careful of her mobility because she can easily ditch her jump in baiting out your 6A and hitting you on recovery.

I've recently taught XDest how to play the matchup correctly, meaning of course to never actually try to pressure and just rely on Noel fucking up and getting random hitconfirms because Tao's neutral converts into better shit than ours.

Basically, the way us as Noel's deal with the matchup is a lot like playing poker:

25% Noel skill level: You MUST be able to do max damage off of all of your confirms, if you're only doing 3k off of a fatal, and can't turn an overhead into 3.2k and corner carry, stop netplaying right now and hit training mode. Noel NEEDS all of her damage, or else a good Tao WILL time you out, it's not hard, Noel's mobility is really good, but Tao can be out of reach as much as she wants.

25% Tao skill level: Assuming the Tao plays the matchup correctly, it still wont matter if they crack under pressure, or if they are predictable. Getting hit by every overhead and every air grab will guarantee Noel's victory, but if they can block correctly, poke out correctly, and break almost every grab, air or ground, that is when you have your true matchup challenge.

50% Luck: Much like a game of cards, no matter how good the players are, if they get dealt nothing but shitty hands, their going to lose anyway. How this translates to the Tao matchup is simply random moves by both players working out in one of the player's favor. This matchup is one of the few matchups where a simple move done full screen can turn the tide, so let's say the Tao decides to go in and follow through with a j.5D, and you as a Noel decide to 6A, EITHER CHARACTER CAN SCORE THE HIT IN THIS SITUATION, a small difference in timing can mean Tao get's CH by 6A for a combo, or Tao catches you whiffing 6A, one of these things can and will happen, but much like the skill level examples above, it's up to either player to make sure that this seemingly random and lucky occurrence becomes damage and momentum.

Remember: you WILL be chasing her down 100% of the match, if you are not doing this, then the Tao is playing the matchup wrong. You get hit's mostly by luck, and you GET HIT mostly by Tao reacting to you whiffing stuff trying to catch her, but even if you're playing the matchup 100% correctly, you CAN and still WILL lose a lot, because it just wasn't in the cards for you to land enough hits.

A good example of this was last night playing XDest, each of us got time out victories on each other once that night.

- XDest got his by playing the matchup correctly and running the whole match, only coming in to punish my whiffed moves that failed to catch him at neutral.

- I got mine because XDest was playing the matchup correctly and running the whole match, only coming in to punish my whiffed moves that failed to catch him at neutral. BUT THEN at the last second I tagged him with a crouching hit 2D, rapid cancelled to go into a bigger combo, and just before the timer hit 0, I managed to bring his health down to about a pixel below mine.

Welcome to the matchup.

If you start getting pressured and mixed-up by Tao, how should you go about getting out of it? It seems like there are no gaps and almost everything is free to escape for Tao. It just seems like lock-down. I had my ass handed to me a lot tonight and I would love some pointers on handling the insane pressure.

Tao pressure is only scary because it LOOKS so fast, in truth, she has a lot of gaps in her blockstrings that you can D through or poke out of with relative ease.

For example, if you ever REACT to a Tao throwing out her 6B overhead, it's a free 4D Fatal for us, her 2A loses to 2D for free, her 6A can be 3C'd under, her 5B can be 4D'd and 2D'd, pretty much everything Tao can do to pressure you is unsafe, if you find yourself blocking a Tao drive, it's usually pretty safe to disrespect by throwing out a 5A, ESPECIALLY after an IB, but don't mash it, just hit it once, that way if Tao uses a cancel that makes your 5A whiff, you'll have time to recover and block.

The Tao matchup is actually REALLY Free if the Tao thinks they can just pressure all day.

Having very little Tao match experience(even from CT until now) shows a great deal. It seems like throwing out drives would be a lot more dangerous than that. Or even 5A.

Reacting to Tao's 6B was very difficult on the net. It is pretty fast. I guess I just need more practice. Offline practice.

Thanks.

No problem. Obviously, throwing out drive is always a risk, but it's a tool we still have to use to win, knowing when to disrespect, and when to block is a big part of every one of our matchups, because by baiting your opponent's drive bait, suddenly you get the momentum back WITHOUT having to risk throwing out a drive.

Aren't mindgames fun?

What about teching her air-throws? I think in that cases, she´d have the advantage because of her great air game :/

Umm.... Tech them? That's really the only answer I can give... But then again I'd recommend not going in the air against Tao in general. If you're pressing buttons in the air and she counter hits you with her drive, that's a free combo for her. I can't really say anything more on the match up, other than what LunaKage has said, except that you have to be patient with her. Also, you don't need to fear her pressure, just respect it enough to block when you need to and start throwing counterattacks when you know she's doing something unsafe.

So, we need to punish her unsafe stuff for this matchup ... Is there any situation or method for getting the offensive against Tao?

You have to pry the offensive out of her weird cat/human hands. She is not gonna give the offensive up unless you MAKE her give it up. As soon as you can punish her pressure, punish it, and try to hold on to your offensive for as long as you can. It's not easy, especially since she can zip away from you any time she wants. The main thing is, is that once you get the offensive, hold on to it for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. Also watch out for her distortions. They're effective reversals when she's on the defensive.
