AC+R: Axl v. Potemkin

Recommended Posts

Rashousen from far away (max Rensen range or further) seems to work pretty well. Potemkin already has to sit there and block a lot of Rensens, so there's a good chance he'll get caught. Obviously, don't be too predictable about it, but once I started seeing that it was working, maybe the guy I was playing wasn't that great (still better than me though), but I threw my fair share of Rashousens out and I rarely got caught. Unless he's already expecting it, all Pot really can do is jump over it on reaction and Axl risks nothing. Keeps the other player on their toes too.

I'm pretty sure this was also the case in AC but throwing out 6H is especially risky against Pot, since 90% of the time it seemed like he just backdashed into Pot Buster, to the point where I just gave up on using it at all.

Er, potemkin can hammerfall through rashousen. I can guarantee you that from far away, it can be done on reaction. Perhaps you're not risking getting hit, but absorbing a rashousen gains him distance and frames you don't want him to have. I would bet that good potemkins can react to it from rensen range, and although rensen will beat hammerfall, they can charge while watching for rensen, hammerfall from a decent distance, and catch you even if you fake-rashou. Obviously some people will fall for things they shouldn't, and being unpredictable is good, but I would argue that rashousen is almost never a good option against a good potemkin. I say this as someone who's gotten away with it a lot, but trust me, if they know what they're doing and know the matchup, you're gonna have a bad time throwing it out.

I agree that 6H is risky against pot, and I would even go as far as saying it's basically a bad (or at least very situational) tool in this matchup, because in addition to just backdashing, pot can also 6P it on reaction. However, you can definitely use it as an overhead in blockstrings, so it's not completely terrible. IAD back j.S is an amazing tool against pot, as is 5H, as is 2H, as is rensen.

Essentially, this is the only matchup I can think of where you want to keep your distance most of the time. You definitely can approach pot if you're at advantage, but your first priority at neutral is being somewhere he doesn't have good options. Potemkin definitely can't approach you easily, and you have the tools to respond to anything he can try to get in.

Well, I'll throw my notes on this.

  • Potemkin's butt slam can be high countered on reaction. It's better to do that instead of 2S.
  • 3P full spaced as a meaty on Potemkin's knockdown is viable. Since it multi hit's it means he can't do wake up Hammerfall against you.
  • Speaking of multi hit's, Rensengeki is rad and multi-hits, and since Hammerfall has a point of super armor, 2P xx Rensengeki works out fine here from mid-screen. You can go for the FRC from this and do the usual follow ups.
  • He's heavy and can't air dash. Go be a jerk and abuse 6K, Backwards IAD 6P or 2S depending on how much you trust your reactions, and from what range you're at. If they're FD'ing in the air, you're winning. If you're hitting them, you're winning as well.
  • Instant block 6H xx Slidehead, and jump after 6H or you're probably going to have a horrible time as Potemkin slowly walks in on you after a hard knock down.
  • Play very patiently and make Potemkin sad to jump in the air. You can bully Potemkin, but you'll have to get used to playing lame. Luckily he's slow, and has very telegraphed jumps.  Just be aware that if you're eating a slide head, it's probably going to be a bad scenario, but it's not the worst of it. If you learn to FD at certain points, and take advantage of knock downs to get farther away from Potemkin, you can make things extremely miserable for him.
