Zoning, Controlling Space And Rushdown

Recommended Posts

No, this is not an explanation thread.

So from Blazblue to Persona, I've been using characters that zone or control space. Mainly, Lambda, Platinum, Elizabeth, Yosuke, Yukiko etc.

I mastered how to zone and use all it's gimmicks and stuff, but since Persona is really hard to play against rushdown characters, I'm thinking of switching my playstyle from zoning to rushdown. (Going to learn Mitsuru)

Now here is the problem. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO PLAY RUSHDOWN! From the moment I got Blazblue, pretty much my first fighting game, I natuarally learnt how to play Lambda and didn't even know she was a zoner. Later on, I found that out and since I was already so good with her, I learnt more. Now, zoning is second nature to me, EVEN WHEN I USE RUSHDOWN characters.

So, any tips? Do you go in when there is an opening? Do you just rush in anyway? Are you supposed to cry when you suck at mixups?

Thanks.

All the time I've played Mitsuru, I've never actually considered her to be much of a rushdown character, at least not in a sense where she tries to open people up. I guess Spacing would be what she does best. Try to keep your opponents at a distance where you can safely harass them with your normals, without fear of getting hit yourself. She punishes players for mashing, jumping, standing up, anything really. This is where her damage really comes from. Once the other player begins to respect you, try to think of your pressure as a game. How long can I keep them blocking for? Can I lock them down enough to use Marin Karin? How much meter can I steal? The farther you can take it, the more options you'll earn. 50 meter grants you access to j.B > OMC > j.B, allowing some real mixup. Getting to the corner transforms your throw into something worth teching. Getting a real corner combo gives you mix up options and better pressure with 50/50 mirror oki, safe jump setups, bufudyne gimmicks, etc.

If you're interested in learning Mitsuru, I'm happy to help. It looks like you're on 360 so unfortunately we wouldn't be able to meet up online. Send me a PM sometime and we can figure it out, if you want.

Funny story, I mained Lambda but ended up being a Mitsuru main when I switched to P4U. Like Rath said, her style isn't exactly rushdown, she's very good at spacing and handling neutral, oh and fishing for people mashing buttons gotta love that. Her rushdown consists mostly of pressing an advantage. Say she gets a knockdown or a combo reset, she transforms into an incredibly scary character. So yeah, she can RTSD, but it will take some getting used to, especially since you're only used to zoning.

Oh, and Mitsuru mirrors are perhaps the most entertaining pastime in the game. Second only to a pair of Elizabeths spamming Zio like it's the elevator attendant edition of Dragon Ball Z.

I'm not going to throw all of my questions at you on this thread about Mitsuru, it's not necessary. I'll PM you soon, and thanks for offering to help me. But am I right in you saying I can be comfortable throwing out OMC's just to improve my mixup? I've been aware of Marin Karin being something that you can sneak in when you good with pressuring your opponent, but I can waste 50 meter just like that? These are things I need to get used to. I thought you should wait for an opportunity to cancel a sweep into 2B when in midscreen, then again a sweep isn't something you could get so easily with Mitsuru. Don't want to go too off topic, so, you'll get some PM's from me eventually if that's alright with you :)

And I'll just go into Mitsuru Archive to ask questions too, thanks.
