Combo Theory

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, Ive played 2D fighting games for a while but always casually(never played online) and never tried to get better. But now that under night in-birth is out I wanna try to play a bit more competitively and improve my game. I could watch videos and stuff but I wanna put some effort in trying to do combos myself first instead of mimicking.

My question is how do people go about figuring out combos, blockstrings, pressure etc?

I'd lurk around forums and find people testing stuff out and then all these neat combos just come about.

For me no matter how much I train I can't seem to figure stuff on my own(usual damage output is less than 2000 without supers.)

So I wanted to ask for some tips that could get me started and make my training time more than just practicing(mimicking) combos.

If any help can be provided I'd really appreciate it and hope to see some people in the online lobbies.

Thanks

I'm not great at figuring out combos but I'm pretty sure it's just knowing if the hitstun on a move is longer than the startup of the next move you want to go to in the combo.

Watch match videos, read wiki, experiment.

This. You need a skeleton, a template of sorts. Why waste time and effort when someone already has and recorded it? You'd be doing them and yourself a disservice by unnecessarily working solo. No one gets really far on their own. Why not use the internet?

Anyway, I'd recommend at the very least learning a few bread and butter combos for your char- these are the easiest, most accessible combos a char can have and your fallback in case you want to end a round or gain momentum. Once you get a few bnbs from different starters this will be your skeleton. From there you can experiment, "tweak" the skeleton, if you will, to fit your needs and play style. Want to be fancy? Want corner carry all the time? Max damage? Meter? Whatever you want, work that skeleton to fit your desires.

In order to experiment I guess you would need some system knowledge - if you played bb I could have given you a college lesson on fundamentals lol. But different game and different rules. I'm afraid I'm not very experienced on unib's mechanics and combo theory, so hopefully someone more qualified can stroll by and offer assistance.

I studied the every possible cancel and read the frame data/proration/damage for every move my character had (including jump start up and other miscellaneous system data). Even then my contributions were relatively small in the grand scheme of things. It way way easier to just learn from watching others.

But hey I was way into combo smithing so maybe others know about getting results with less studying.

In other words; be creative, let your imagination run wild.
