Super Gonq Battles - Ottawa's Biggest Fighting Game Tournament in a Long Fukken Time

Where?
Ottawa, Ontario.
1385 Woodroffe Ave.
Algonquin College, Robert C. Gillett Student Commons
1st and 2nd floor. Lobby and room e206a/b.

When?
Saturday, November 22nd. Noon - 9pm.

Pricing?
One time $5 venue fee for tournament participants.
$10 entry to main games.
$5 entry to side tournaments.

Tournament pricing on side tournaments subject to change based on participant interest.

Why should I come?

  • We have anime confirmed to be coming out from MTL, so if you think you can play GG, BB, Ultimax or Skullgirls, you're in good company.
  • This venue is currently the heart of the Ottawa Melee competitive community, as we've been running monthlies for ages now. We had 72 entrants for Melee Singles last month.
  • Ottawa doesn't get many big events, and this one is the biggest we're capable of. Nearly every community on board to help out.
  • College campus. Lots of pot monsters. Fo sho.

Without further ado, the games we're running:

GAMES AND TOURNAMENT START TIMES
On-site Registration starts at 11am.

Tekken and SFIV - Around 4pm
Anime – Around 2pm
Melee pools – Around 2 pm
Smash 4 Wii U - immediately after Melee Singles.
Poverty Side Games (Unib, SG and Ultimax) - Evening

Other games will likely be run at the event as well.

We're also pending a "mystery games" tournament (check back for updates)

We ask that people register themselves on this spreadsheet to give us accurate estimates of participants. THIS IS NOT AN EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION.

POSSIBLE EVENTS
Mystery Game Tournament (Confirmation Pending)

Parking?
Yes. It's free parking. All day.

How's the venue?
Well-ventilated and roomy, but please remember to shower and wear deodorant.  There should be plenty of electrical for your own setup... also Starbucks.

Livestreamed?
Yes. The plan is to run two broadcasts, one for Melee and one for HD games, both featuring commentary. More info closer to the date.

Am I forgetting anything?
Probably, the thread will be updated regularly. For local players, you can stay updated with all Gonq events at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/algonquincgc/

Community interest?
All of Ottawa is on board for my gross misuse of student tuition to throw giganto fighting game tournaments.

MTL is confirmed for Anime games. Ottawa will win Guilty Gear, tho.
MTL better show for Smash or they are a bunch o' free hazbeens.
I'd love to have MTL's SF come out. We never talk.

Some Toronto is confirmed for Smash. If more players from TO would show to try and take our money, that would be good too (Not that it would happen. O:< ).

It looks like more than a dozen are looking to come up for anime games from Montreal, and maybe even a few more from the distant land of Waterloo.  Should be a good time.  We should see about reserving the back room at Summerhays for that evening when it gets closer to the date.  (Assuming there's interest.)

Summerhays? What's that? Is it food? Because I'm always interested in food ^,^

Yup, nice little bar/restaurant near campus.  We went after the last tourney you guys came down for and put two tables together in the back room for two-dozen of us.

First time going to a tournement. It was a great fun, I'll definitely come again. I Wish we had more time to play casuals for Uniel, but we only had one station and few players, by the time people actually showed up, the tourney had started. Then it was way too late once it got done.

Shoutout to Summerhays having the greatest burgers I've had in a while.

Obligatory post:

Good work on running the tournaments guys! Had lots of fun. Did feel that -maybe- there were too many games trying to be run which is why some of them didn't quite finish/actually start.

Great tournament everyone! Had a ton of fun playing everyone in Guilty Gear, BlazBlue not so much, haven't practiced in waaaay too long(also, Izayoi sucks lol). GGs to Lofo, Sage, Yuri, Essay, Psychotik, Rigel's broken stick adapter and anyone else not from MTL I played that I'm forgetting.

Shoutouts to the Montreal delegation, you guys make an old man proud.

Yeaaaah... sorry about not hanging out after the tournament, it ended really late and I'm starting to get too old to drive 3h+ from 1am to 4 whilst having woken up at 7h30 after a "good" 5h30 hours of sleep. I can't do that shit anymore, it takes me a whole week to recuperate. We left early and I still managed to get to bed at only 3h15am, so I don't even.

Nice tournament, thanks to everyone who ran stuff while I was actively keeping every single bracket behind! A few hiccups but you're genuinely trying to run a great event so I'm sure things will be smoother in the future. You can bet I'll be interested in coming to whatever is the next installment!

Shoutouts to the road to Ottawa being really easymode, except when the fog is being frighteningly real at 3AM holy crap.

What a scrub, taking the easy mode 417. Try hard mode 174 next time, like we did (by accident).

Actually don't, that was genuinely scary to drive on.

What the heck. Icekin lives?

Uuh...have I been missing from some place?

Hello guys,

So i'm one of the ottawa guys and what i'm doing is i'm selling food.I thought this would be a good idea because do you guys really want to walk 15 minutes back and forth when you have matches? Naw, not a good idea. The money for the food is ending up going to the algonquin gaming club so we can purchase better monitors and ect. So, if anyone here has any food allergies, please tell me so i can work around them. Alright, that's all and good luck to you guys in the upcoming tournament!

(ps: cause there might be the odd person who asks. I'm a culinary student and i'm going to be graduating in December). I'll also post a menu when i figure out what i can or can't make.

Also, I forgot to mention shoutouts to this guy, everything I ate was great. Roastbeef sandwiches were super good and the hummus was great. I hope doing it was worthwhile!
