Yu's Persona, Izanagi, gives Yu options that better round out his toolset. Where Yu himself specializes in being able to fight very comfortably up close in neutral, Izanagi gives him options from attacking from afar such as with his Zio projectile and his Swift Strike specials. His 6P assist also gives a partner a good tool to help with blockstring pressure. However, if Izanagi is hit by any attacks their action will be interrupted and Yu will take 5% recoverable life damage.

Overview

Backstory

Yu Narukami is the protagonist of Persona 4. He is a high school student who moves away to the countryside of Inaba to live with his uncle Ryotaro Dojima and cousin Nanako Dojima for a year as a result of his parents working abroad, and attends Yasogami High School. Establishing the "Investigation Team" with his high school friends they were able to solve a series of homicide cases that was happening in the town of Inaba.

Before moving to Inaba, Yu felt cold and distant towards those around him. However, this changes after he starts building friendships with the Investigation Team as well as the residents of Inaba. As a result, Yu becomes more cordial in his interactions with others - opening himself up more and gaining a sense of maturity throughout the events of Persona 4. Now, Yu realizes his need to draw strength from the bonds he forges in order to persevere through life.

  • Good balance of damage, range, and mobility.
  • With a partner assist and his Ziodyne, Yu has high extended combo potential.
  • Balanced mixture of highs and lows thanks to Yu's Swift Strike (which has quick startup), his aerial normals, and 5C.
  • Can carry you to the corner rather easily thanks to his Swift Strike as well as his j.C aerial combo ender.
  • Thusly, Yu is one of the scariest characters to deal with when he has you in the corner, especially when paired with an assist (if you whiff a DP against him in the corner, start praying).
  • His Ziodyne distortion is very solid thanks to its ability to fullscreen punish and its high damage.
  • Yu has the unique ability to delay Izanagi's normal attacks within his specific smart combos, giving him greater control over his strings and which can trick his opponent into thinking he has finished attacking.
  • Is one of the characters that has a reversal action that launches him in the air, allowing it to serve as a decent anti-air.
  • Relatively fast startup on 5C, despite its lower range compared to those of other characters.
  • Very long range on Yu's 5BB string, and this move also happens to be his 6P assist.
  • Has a full-screen projectile.
  • Since Yu is a Persona user, he will take damage if Izanagi is hit on-screen.
