Elizabeth

ElizabethMake sure she doesn't do ANYTHING
Even

This matchup is an interesting one, Marie has plenty of ways to lock Liz down and stop her defensive options, but any one touch can lead into a bad situation/death. Play it patient, but stay on the aggressive. Stay on her when you can, and set up when you're fullscreen.

Neutral

Midrange to close range is where you want to constantly be as Marie in order to effectively stay on Liz. However, fullscreen isn't too bad if you want to start setting up!

Make use of normals like 5C, 2C, and 5B, as those are large and fast enough to stop Liz from getting started in neutral. SB Presents can win neutral easily, take advantage of it, but don't overuse it.
Use Stigma of Condemnation/MagatamaP4AU Marie StigmaOfCondemnation.pngGuardAllStartup14RecoveryTotal 41Advantage-7 to punish whiffed 5CP4Arena Elizabeth 5C.pngGuardAllStartup15Recovery23Advantage-5/2CP4Arena Elizabeth 2C.pngGuardAllStartup31Recovery18Advantage-7. It also does a great job of calling out any of Liz's specials from the midrange. After blocking A MaziodyneP4Arena Elizabeth Maziodyne.pngGuardAllStartup23RecoveryTotal 64Advantage-14, you'll have enough time to pull out any present. Use these to take space, or force Liz to move from her position. However, after B MaziodyneP4Arena Elizabeth Maziodyne.pngGuardAllStartup23RecoveryTotal 64Advantage-14, she can call you out with a follow up A Mazio to call you out for pulling a present out. Another way of dealing with Elizabeth's lasers is by blocking them and taking space by running in, or super jumping and airdashing over them.
Sometimes Elizabeth will try to do D GarudyneP4Arena Elizabeth Magarudyne.pngGuardAllStartup20RecoveryUntil L+4Advantage-3 in order to bait anti airs. Typically it's good to back off and try to punish it with MagatamaP4AU Marie StigmaOfCondemnation.pngGuardAllStartup14RecoveryTotal 41Advantage-7 on whiff, but if you're feeling bold you can also hit her out the air with 2CP4AU Marie 2C.pngGuardAllStartup16Recovery33Advantage-19 or even 5DP4AU Marie 5D.pngGuardAllStartup??RecoveryTotal 49Advantage-/2DP4AU Marie 2D.pngGuardAllStartup??RecoveryTotal 54Advantage-.

Offense

STAGGER IS HUGE! Staggering with Marie's A normals and taking advantage of her bag cancels can make it especially hard for Liz to take advantage of her defensive options. 5AAA and 2A are -1, leaving Marie basically neutral with Elizabeth (her fastest normal is 7F).
A really good string against liz is 5AAA>j.C, it leaves a 2 frame gap in between. This pressure reset is strong because:

  • She cannot debilitate (Only activates on frame 4)
  • She cannot 2B (Head invuln activates on frame 6)
  • She has no super reversals to contest it

Be weary that there is a gap in between j.C and 5A, but it's small enough that Liz can't mash.
Be weary of being too jumpy or overusing j.C, as Liz has some of the best anti airs in the game. Don't take it out your gameplan completely, but try not to rely on it too much. Jumping back and doing j.C/j.D is good for baiting this out.

Defense

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Liz lacks true gatlings other than her 5A>2A,2A>2A and autocombo! Everything else has a gap. Lets talk about these gaps real quick before we get to some of the heavier things:
All of these can be rolled, dped, or supered through
5A/5AA>5B
5A>5C (ON IB)
5B>5BB
These are the most common blockstrings that Elizabeth will do from close up that have gaps. Now, lets hit some other key points:
5A Gatling: Very important to recognize that Liz can only do 5A/2A gatling up to 3 times. Watch out for tick throws during these staggered strings!
j.B: This move is an amazing air-to-air. As an air-to-ground? Not so much. It can whiff on crouchers from afar (late active frames can still catch crouchers though) , so you could sweep her and go into a sweet 236B combo! If possible, try to 2B as well.
5B: Decent button that pulls you in, if Liz leaves a big enough gap, it's also possible to sweep or roll through as mentioned earlier.
2B: Typically after 2B, Liz will go into j.B, which can be low profiled via sweep, or you can press 2B. To call you out for this, Liz can also do 2B>j.C, but any cancel option that she does will leave a large enough gap to DP. Not cancelling into anything also leaves her very minus!

THANATOS RPS
This is likely what blows up more people than anything else in Elizabeth's kit. Thantos RPS is a rock paper scissors-like scenario that you end up in after Elizabeth does 5CP4Arena Elizabeth 5C.pngGuardAllStartup15Recovery23Advantage-5. She has a multitude of followups to call out certain options. Knowing how to deal with these is key to beating Elizabeth on defense. I'll break each option down universally, then go into what Marie specifically can do.

5C>2C (instant release): This is a powerful frametrap. Mashing in between 5C>2C can lead to you getting counter hit because of the armor frames. If you know this is coming, block and break the persona accordingly. Another method of dealing with this is instant blocking the 2nd hit of 5C, and super jumping out. Don't worry, as even if this is mistimed, you can still block the 2C. Additionally, if you are in the corner, IBing the 2nd hit of 5C and doing magatama will hit liz out of it. 236A also works well if Liz is too close.
5C>2[C]: Held 2C and 2C operate in different ways. Elizabeth will typically do this to call you out for being too patient. The more she holds 2C, the less recovery has. She can hold it enough to where she can recover before the move activates. Note that she can also let go of 2C at any time she's charging, and it will have armor frames.
Here's your options to counterplay:
Break the persona while it's charging (she will have to call you out at a specific time for mashing)
Instant block 2nd hit of 5C and super jump (your best option)
Card SuperP4AU Marie ShutupIhateyouyoustupidjerk.pngGuardAllStartup4+(50 Flash)+10RecoveryTotal 76Advantage-38
5C>5D(Command grab): 5DP4Arena Elizabeth 5D.pngGuardStartup30Recovery13Advantage- is a 30F command grab that Elizabeth will toss out to catch you for being too patient. This is the easiest and the least threatening option to deal with because of how slow it is. Your options for dealing with this are mashing after 5C, jumping out of it. Additionally you can also do Card SuperP4AU Marie ShutupIhateyouyoustupidjerk.pngGuardAllStartup4+(50 Flash)+10RecoveryTotal 76Advantage-38
5C>214A(BufudyneP4Arena Elizabeth Mabufudyne.pngGuardAir UnblockableStartup21RecoveryTotal 59Advantage-10): This is the one good callout option that Elizabeth has for mashing. If you're 5Aing or jumping too much out of her pressure, this is what she'll start to introduce in order to beat you. Without meter, this is the lowest damaging option. Your options for beating this are blocking and pressing 5A.
5C>214C/D(MaragidyneP4Arena Elizabeth Maragidyne.pngGuardAllStartup38RecoveryTotal 88Advantage+18):A bit of a rarer option that Liz will do in order to catch you mashing from afar. It has the slowest startup out of everything else, so you can run at her and hit her out of it before the flame pillars hit you (IF IT'S THE D VERSION).
The C version comes out in front of Elizabeth, and will be used to check you for running in to punish her. Fortunately, she lacks any good conversions off of this, and it still has very slow startup! Jump over it, or use magatama to punish Elizabeth for using this.
5C>Dash Cancel: Elizabeth is -3 on her 5C dash cancel, from afar and even midrange she remains relatively safe, however if she's too close you can start your pressure with 5A. This is her safest option after 5C.

Now that we've covered all the general options and counterplay, lets talk about ANOTHER way to beat Elizabeth RPS. Marie can instant block the 2nd hit of 5C and 5A, allowing you to beat EVERY option except for bufudyne after 5C!
You HAVE to instant block the 2nd hit of 5C and instantly 5A. As soon as the 5A makes contact, jump cancel and block.
This will beat:
5C>2C :This will cause you to jump cancel the armor frames and jump, hit thanatos on the way down
5C>2[C] : This will break thanatos
5C>5D: This will also break thanatos
5C>Any delayed thanatos button (5C again or j.C) : BREAKS THANATOS
5C>214A : This is the ONLY thing that beats this.
