Originally released in arcades in 2008 and on home consoles in 2009, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is the first BlazBlue game in the series. At the time, it was considered to be a kind of alternate flavor or even "spiritual successor" to the Guilty Gear franchise, playing off of similar anime fighter design and workings from that franchise, but reworking and refining them in its own... "unique" ways. Most significantly, it aimed to help reduce the barriers of entry to the fighting game genre with generous buffer systems and specific moveset design, many systems of which can still be found in future BlazBlue games and numerous other fighters today. Aside from the gameplay, Calamity Trigger also brought to the table improved graphics such as its high-quality rotoscoped sprite art, unique VFX, and 3D backgrounds.
With 10 characters introduced at first, and two more later additions, the roster reaches a number of 12 total characters (not counting Unlimited versions).
This game is what many of the mainline FGC consider to be "Kusoge From the Japanese "クソゲー", meaning "shitty game"Kusoge are games which are highly broken in the literal sense. Kusoge often function poorly, and lack polish, and usually have extreme mechanics/balance. Kusoge is both a term of endearment and an insult, depending on the context.". It is probably the most tame of early Team Blue's very "special" social experiment games, but it still very much earns its title. A lot of the game's weakly-implemented system and self-mechanics lead to heavy character abuses (and by extension, inability to overcome abuses), questionable or even meaningless interactions with mechanics, and many situations where the game is just plain irritating to play regardless of whether you're winning or losing. BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is undoubtedly a game with many flaws, but it can be appreciated for its flaws, rather than in spite of them.
