The first game of the Guilty Gear series. Guilty Gear Missing Link was a six-button game: one punch, one kick, two for weapon attack buttons, and the remaining two for special actions. The original Guilty Gear featured ten characters on its roster and three game modes: Arcade, Versus, and Training.

Gameplay-wise, GG introduced one of the series' most famous mechanic, the instant-kill. A big difference from future games in the series is that supers here were called Chaos Attacks. When a character's health was below the halfway point a red aura would surround them and they would enter Chaos Mode in which unlimited Chaos Attacks were available.
That said, this game is what many of the mainline FGC consider to be "{{keyword|kusoge}}". Most characters have infinites, some have multiple types of infinites, some characters are borderline incomplete, others are ridiculously over-tuned. Missing Link is a game with many flaws, and it should be appreciated for its flaws, not in spite of them. Polished and inoffensive games exist, and this game is for when you want unabashed insanity.

Revision as of 16:53, 5 December 2021

Originally released in 1998, Guilty Gear introduced the world to an eclectic cast of characters as well as a number of unique game mechanics like the infamous Instant Kill. Missing Link was an ambitious game that broke new ground in many ways and helped establish the air-dasher genre loved by many today.

That said, this game is what many of the mainline FGC consider to be "kusoge From the Japanese "クソゲー", meaning "shitty game"Kusoge are games which are highly broken in the literal sense. Kusoge often function poorly, and lack polish, and usually have extreme mechanics/balance. Kusoge is both a term of endearment and an insult, depending on the context.".
It is strongly recommended that you familiarize yourself with the Mechanics of missing link, especially Teching and Instant Kills. The information there can help you avoid getting robbed by nonsense.

The PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch releases of Guilty Gear: The Missing Link do not include online netplay. Furthermore, the PC port does not run properly on monitors that are not 60hz refresh rate, and sizes incorrectly on monitors with aspect ratios other than 4:3 and 16:9. If you wish to play online, emulation is the best choice. If you wish to play offline, consider the Nintendo Switch version for portability.

Finding matches can be difficult, so it is recommended that you join a Discord community for it. We recommended this Discord. It is highly recommended that you play with a wired connection to ensure a playable experience.
