The same attack can hit two characters (the opponent and his persona) at the same time. The way it works is that

This leads to visually strange situations like Narukami's 5B hitting the opponent's persona, then a moment later, the enemy jumps into the active frames and gets hit. This is further compounded by the fact that hitstop only applies to the attacker and the defender, thus allowing the attack to hit the unaffected character with the active frames plus the hitstop frames!

Button Priority

Button priority in this game goes A > B > C > D.

For example:

  • pressing B + C would have your character perform a C.

Because there are so many commands that are 2 or 3 buttons, the rules for determining what command you get is simple: The command that uses the highest priority button wins. Burst has highest priority if available.

Examples:

  • Pressing A + B + D would execute a Furious Action (B+D) instead of an All Out Attack (A+B).
  • Pressing A + B + C + D would execute a burst (A+C+D), or if no burst is available, then a throw (C+D).

Hitting Two Opponents with the Same Attack

The same attack can hit two characters (the opponent and his persona) at the same time. Usually an attack's remaining active frames get converted to recovery frames after hitting an opponent. In this game the remaining active frames can still hit the other enemy!

Super Freeze Buffer

During an opponent's super freeze (when they perform a super attack, the screen freezes briefly), you can input commands and they will be executed immediately after the super freeze ends. This means that provided you are not in the middle of an attack, it is trivially easy to react to an opponent's super attacks with an attack of your own.

Often this is buffer is used to execute an invincible attack that will hit the opponent out of their super!
