Recommended Posts

“LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO— 23rd August 2011—SEGA® of Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that Virtua Fighter™ 5, the latest title in its celebrated fighting franchise, will see a grand update and expansion released as a standalone title for both Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.and PlayStation® Network. The new game, entitled Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, will contain a full overhaul of Virtua Fighter 5’s mechanics, balance and animations, along with new game modes, new dynamic fighting arenas, a massive collection of customisable character items and two all-new characters added to the roster. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is expected to be available in Summer 2012.”

Hell yeah!!!!!!

Developer Interview

What has been changed from the original VF5 to Final Showdown?

- Taka-arashi from VF3 returns, and a new fighter, Jean Kujo has been added. Both have wildly different playstyles compared to the rest of the cast.

- Stages now have super low walls, and also walls that are removed/added before each round. There are now rectangular arenas, octagonal arenas and elongated rectangle arenas to deal with.

- Evading is a lot riskier now, because if you fail to evade and are hit with a full circular attack, it's counterhit damage. But on the other hand, evading nets you a much bigger damage reward.

- Moves like Akira's f+P+K+G which used to give a +15, struggable guard break are now +15 guaranteed on hit

- Throw clashes and 0 frame throws have been removed

- Throws are now grouped into three directions (back, neutral, forward) instead of the six in VF5. However, you can no longer do multiple throw escape inputs; you can only choose one direction.

- Easy throw escape input option selects have been added. You can now hold the guard button while inputting a throw escape (Punch + direction) and you will be able to block and throw escape at the same time.

- Bounds from VF5 have been completely reanimated and there are now big and small type of bounds.

Awesome that this is finally getting a up to date console release.

So what gives this game its legendary status as a gdlk game, anyway?

Fuck Yeah, FINALLY!!!

So what gives this game its legendary status as a gdlk game, anyway?

It has one of the most complex and polished gameplay ever, simply.

I'll main Lei Fei like in VF4 btw.

long story short vf was the first game that REALLY got people FUCKING PUMPED over in japan i mean like REALLY fucking pumped and vf2 was really hard too so people got hype when people did hard shit

then vf3 happened and some people stopped playing but then vf4 happened and the game came back like nobody's business (it also introduced 3d custom girl to fighting games) and then vf5 came out and had to be revised a million times but it's FINALLY just where it needs to be

honestly the hardest part is just getting used to the movement and footsies (yes, despite what seth killian wants you to believe there are actually footsies in 3d fighters and you can't just backdash all day! at least not in vf). parts of the game have been changed to be "beginner friendly" (like the removal of multiple throw escapes, which is honestly making the game harder in a way) but there has yet to be a system change i have found to be objectionable. this is shaping up to be the best vf ever.

as for beginner characters, i can't say for sure atm because of how much the cast has evolved from vanilla 5. but typically speaking, grapplers like jeffry and wolf are good characters to learn with; and you really can't go wrong with akira, either.

if you're practicing with vanilla 5 then goh and lau are good choices too.

I was thinking between Akira,Brad,Goh,Jacky or Kage. Also this would be my first VF to seriously start playing. I only messed around with VF3 and 4 machines and had no clue what I was doing.

jacky is hard to recommend. i learned vf5 with jacky and while it's certainly possible, you're going to struggle a lot at first because you're going to be doing no damage (unless you learn his real ch smash upper combos right away) and you're not going to know how to poke with him without some practice.

that being said, if you just watch some videos and figure out how to control space with him, you might be able to learn him pretty quickly. the basic idea is that at long range you want to either crouch dash and 66 K+G4 (the 4 is really important as it backturns you and puts you at + frames) or you want to crouch dash and 3K confirm in to a canned string. at mid range you want to mix up between 3K, 6P and 1P, and to catch evades you want to use either iaigeri (hold 6K then G cancel), 1P (confirm in to K) or 46 K+G (one of jacky's few full circular moves). of course there are other moves you can use in these situations (beat knuckle, 44K and a few others come to mind for catching evades) and there will be situations where you won't know what to do without some practice, but that's vf man.

goh is easy to recommend because he will teach you how to do pretty much everything, especially what to do at disadvantage. akira will also teach you pretty much everything. brad and kage are a little too advanced for learning the game, i think.

(this is all talking about vanilla 5, btw)

that being said, you have an amazing resource if you're serious about learning this game. my scrubby ass will probably be practicing this game again very soon and i will without a doubt be consulting the vfdc wiki.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I guess I'll just start with Akira and Goh while messing around with the others. I've been considering trying to play this series quite a lot, but I heard the learning curve scares newbies and casual players away lol.

Unrelated but if I can somehow beat anyone with CS1 Rachel in BB, I can do anything lol.

it's hard to say. i think vf is way easier to learn than say tekken, but i also learned it first. it also helps that there's been framedata for this game since before it even hit consoles.

i think once you get over the OMG IMPOSSIBLE TO DO stuff like eteg and get the basics down you'll quickly realize that the difficulty of the game is in finding your style of play. a wise old sage named dandy j once said (paraphrasing here) that characters in 2D fighters define the player, whereas in 3D fighters, the player defines the character.

one thing i love about vf is that you often times see the same character played in entirely different ways. it's more than just playing moral or abare, it's being able to switch on the fly and showing that it's okay to do "stupid" things from disadvantage sometimes, or showing that you don't always have to poke with your longest reaching midkick to control space. stuff like that.

not that there aren't optimal styles of play, but there's a few such ways to play each character.

I really can't wait till this comes out finally the most balanced game in the word today as far as learning its not to hard of game only things are hard to learn imo . Is you have to stick to one character all the way and guessing which throws there going to use since they so many damn grabs direction wise. Its not a hard game to pick up and it hard to master it though.

pre-fs, each character was limited to four throw directions but you could buffer up to four throw escapes depending on frame (dis)advantage. in fs, each character now only has three, but you can only input one throw escape direction, period.

I'm mad hyped about that tourney at STA... Hope the game gets good exposure from that...

Anyway, I came across this on VFDC, which was from the Sega blogs:

"We’re pretty excited to have a series of trailers coming your way all about Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. Today’s video is a lesson in history straight from Makoto Osaki and Daichi Katagiri of AM2. Sit back and relax as they walk you through the original game to the current version of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown!"

Let's hope they continue to push for increased hype with this game-- for a change!!!
